The Great Fed. Govt Job Boom - December 12, 2009, 06:56 PM

Federal employees making salaries of $100,000 or more jumped from 14% to 19% of civil servants during the recession's first 18 months — and that's before overtime pay and bonuses are counted.

The growth in six-figure salaries has pushed the average federal worker's pay to $71,206, compared with $40,331 in the private sector.

Federal workers are enjoying an extraordinary boom time — in pay and hiring — during a recession that has cost 7.3 million jobs in the private secto

I can co-sign this bullcrap.

I have a friend who graduated about the same time as me. She went to work for the DIA. I thought that would be a bad move - working Federal Gov't on a public salary.

Within three years she eclipsed me by 20% and was getting $10K bonuses! WTF?!

I'm not saying Fed Gov't workers should not get paid - but give me a f'ing break.

That said, where do I sign up.

go getters will do better in the private sector..

You're setting a cap and consigning yourself to a mediocre, albeit secure, financial outlook. This is great for many, but totally unsatisfactory for a few of us

Get yours while you can.The national debt is only up to $90+k per taxpayer. Surely the next generation can shoulder more than that!

There you go. The Hippocratic Government giving out bonuses while the national debt is skyrocketing. Hey, didn't law makers get all bent out of shape when bailed out companies were giving bonuses? What gives?

A lot of the reason for the jump in salaries can be attributed to the government's attempt to eliminate a lot contracts and hire GS employees to do that work. Which may be a good thing.

Well not to burst yall bubble, but the president (yeah the asshole) is only upping Govy's salaries by 2% this year. That includes locality pay. Sucks. But at least the jobs are stable.

2% is an "inflationary match" raise. Essentially it's net zero gain.
But still enough, you should be thankful for that. Beats a pink slip.

I know some jobs that have FROZEN all pay hikes for the next 5 quarters. They automatically tell you - if you want to work here, don't expect a raise until 2011.

Not constantly having worrying about losing a contract/getting a pink slip has had a significant impact on my quality of life , even though I could be making much more in the private sector.

Get cracking on those KSAs people!
