Reminds me of this pic I saw a while back:

Kidding aside, I'm not under the illusion that people my age are going to receive a fraction of the benefits that current retirees get. In fact, I'm ok with paying what was promised to them. However, structural changes should be made for folks decades away from retirement before there's nothing left.

Check out some of the projections for our aging population:
Projections of Future Growth of the Older Population
Combine that with decreasing birthrates (fewer number of payees), and you don't need to be an actuary to see what will happen.

I'm just making shit up.

If I were Emporer of the US, I would work on finding a way to ensure those about to retire get what they paid for. Those 20 years from retiring would get their money back with interest to do with as they will, if they wish, or they can leave it in SS. Those entering the work force now would be required by law to either pay into SS, or pay at least the same percentage into an eligible IRA, 401K or something equivelent. With the added ability to access that money for disability as well as retirement

The anti fix the SS debacle crowd do not support something like this since the money is not "guaranteed." Guess what? SS is not guaranteed at this point. A stroke of the pen can bump my benefits back another few years, can reduce my benefits or just remove them completely. At least in a nice diversified mutual fund, I will have something available and I can add to it as I make more knowing that some shitbag congressman will not pillage it to build a bridge to nowhere.
