Gun Range for an outing with the wife... - April 11, 2011, 04:43 PM

So my wife sort of hinted that she'd like to maybe go shoot guns the other day... I thought I might make an interesting date night sometime here to go to a range. Problem is I'm not really into the gun range scene... she wants to shoot a pistol and I presently don't own one, so we'd have to be in one that does rentals, etc.

I know there are some here that probably know several places off the top of their head and can give me some first hand reviews.

Northern Virginia | firearms training | indoor shooting range| Scenario Area - Silver Eagle Group

That is all you need to know. Gun rentals, instruction, great range, what else do you need.

Most Inexpensive: On-Target, Severn MD.
$10 one-time gun rental free lets you shoot all the variants, brands, and calibers of pistols they have in stock (~30 different kinds). The only caveat is that you have to buy one box of their ammo whenever you change to a new caliber.

Most Expensive: Silver Eagle Group, Ashburn VA

Middle of the Road: Maryland Small Arm Range, Upper Marlboro MD

Not if you're trying to keep to a budget.

With gas nearly $4/gal are you really saving anything by driving from Culpeper to MD?

Maybe, maybe not... depends on the costs at the end location. Then there's the bike... I get about 50mpg. I'm trying not to be sarcastic, but thanks for the heads up on gas costs.

Guns are scary. But a lot of people on here would probably let you at least try out their pistolas if they see this and can get a group together

Took my girlfriend and her son to the range this past Sunday. He's 12 and he shot my AR 15 and it was his first time ever shooting a gun.
It was an indoor range, so the targets were fairly close, started him out at 50 feet and on his second shot he got a bulls eye with open sights!
Moved it out to 75 (as far as the range would go) and he did very well for barley being able to hold the gun, weighing about 90lbs and his first time he was a very good shot and I was very proud of him.
Might get him a .22 rifle so it won't be so heavy on him for a while till he gets use to it.
It's nice to have a girlfriend who loves to shoot and ride bikes with you!
Hope you have a great time!

Blue Ridge Arsenal in Chantily or Silver Eagle Group in Sterling are my two normal places to go shooting. The NRA has a range in its building in Fair Oaks as well, but I've never been there.

NRA range doesn't rent guns. Although god knows they should. Their collection is sick.
