Martial Arts Teacher Arrested For Kicking Student 200 Times

SUFFOLK, Va. -- A martial arts instructor has been arrested for kicking an 11-year-old student more than 200 times, causing internal injuries and possibly breaking a rib.

Police said 47-year-old Susan Bateman of Hampton was arrested Nov. 20 and charged with one felony count of child endangerment.

Police Lieutenant D.J. George said Bateman issued a challenge Nov. 7 during class at a Suffolk dojo to see how many kicks to the abdomen students could take. Students got into a push-up position while Bateman kicked, stopping when the student either said to or went to his or her knees.

George said the 11-year-old boy and another student took more than 200 kicks as the class counted.

The student didn't tell his parents until he needed medical attention.

My parents actually forced me out of Karate when I was young for having my instructor crack two of my ribs.

The eleven year old maintained "pushup" position for 200 kicks without going to his knees!? That's one tough 11-year old!!

Possibly breaking a rib? I can't imagine these were full force kicks. I have mixed feelings on this.

The kid is an idiot for holding out that long. The instructor is an idiot for continuing that long.

I don't know if I'd say the kid is an idiot but the instructor probably should have stopped... then again, the martial arts community have different traditions and values and codes of honor...

You don't think the kid is stupid to hold out for 200 kicks? I mean, at what point does it take a bright student to say "you know, this really hurts (possible broken rib?), I've held out longer than other people... this is good, I'm done." I mean obviously the instructor wasn't kicking full strength, so I'm not sure what the kid thought he was proving.

It shows a dedication and determination in the kid that is rather respectable.

That's one way of seeing it. Personally, if my kid sits there for 200 kicks, I'm smacking him upside the head for being stupid.

"I'm tougher than the other kids." That or your the only one dumb enough to take 200 kicks. Want a cookie? He's 11, I don't know that its "dedication and determination" serious.

The kid is in a martial arts class, a setting of discipline. Was listening to his sensei and doing his best. Its not like he was in a debate class Brad....and now you are going to smack him/her for trying hard in a class you put them in in the first place....nice mixed message dad.

plus your kid would take you out with a roundhouse to the groin after you smacked him/her

Take a look at what I'm wearing, people. You think anybody wants a roundhouse kick to the face while I'm wearing these bad boys?
