I think Leo was in agreement with you on this... As am I for that matter, how anyone could interpret what they said to be the same is beyond me.

I misunderstood the comment. My apologies, Leo.

Hmmm, yes. It does seem quite inflammatory. I, understandably, have a hard time relating. I don't have a solid connection with my heritage, and I'm only 3rd gen American, with little to no knowledge of conditions by which my predecessors got here or lived here.

I do try to give people the benefit of the doubt, and I don't suspect Dr. Carson to be intending to offend in any way. I think it's fair to say that he significantly misrepresents the situation in question with the words he used. BUT...it sounds like he was trying to make a particular point apart from commenting on the hideous nature of slavery. I don't for a second think anyone considers that to have been a good thing.

Maybe I'm cutting him too much slack. Maybe I don't read between the lines enough.

I also think part of the issue may be that the PC culture has led us to euphemize anything we may consider an uncomfortable topic, and this leads to a lot of whitewashing of history.

If someone is black, and I don't care if they're not African American "black" and just got to this country on the first thing smoking out of wherever, or mixed ethnicity and don't think they're black, or one of these 'the new black' believers and don't feel they have to be black (whatever that means to them), the fact is you don't say what he just said.

Dead stop. And if he doesn't know that then his Momma should have taught him better.

Fair enough, but... if I'm reading you right, it sounds like you're putting everyone with darker skin in the same group. I don't believe that is your intention or that you consider all black people to be the same (in terms of shared culture/background with regards to slavery). But your words implied it.

See what I did there?

If what he said is so truly heinous, then I am a bit surprised that Obama's speech didn't get a similar backlash. I guess the word "involuntary" was the big difference? Again, it's hard to say because I don't know all the context and the intentions of the speakers. But I'm willing to try and understand from the speaker's point of view rather than just my own, which is why, to you, I say, "fair enough." It's something he shouldn't have said. It's certainly not the first thing that Dr. Carson has said that makes me wonder, "who writes this guys' speeches?"

At the end of the day, what do you think he was really trying to say with that whole speech?
