Help Please. Freezing my ass off - February 18, 2007, 08:35 AM

Ok. My furnace went out last night. The HSI (Hot Surface Ignitor) went out. This creates heat so that the heat sensor detects heat then tells the gas valve to release gas. the HSI then lights the gas. Well no HSI means no gas release. My whole family had to sleep in the basement near the fireplace. While it was warm it was not whole house heater warm.

This morning I fooled the system by using one of those grill lighters on the heat sensor. Wala! heat. But I cant do this every time the heater kicks on. Plus gas release, my face about 2" from the burners, and a flame does not sound safe.

So if anyone knows any appliance part stores open on Sunday I would appreciate it.

The store should be open on Monday. I hope.

FYI. if you guys have furnaces with HSI (most modern systems do). Get some replacements. They are the most used part of the furnace with a shelf life of 3-5 years if properly handled. Touching the element reduces life. They go out when you need them the most (and usually when you are dead sleep and cozy in my case).

Spares are $20-$50 each. Guess what Im doing on Monday.

actually the HSI lights the gas, then then after ignition, the flame sensor senses flame and allows the gas to stay on. what kind of furnace to you have?. If its a carrier/bryant, i have it. If its a different furnace im might have it also. let me know but if you want it you have to come to md.

Damn man that sucks! You can always hit up home depot or Lowes and grab some portable heaters.

Mine went out about 6 weeks ago....I had the furnace guy come out. (Since I hadn't changed this type of of th current furnaces before) And yeah...I bought a spare as well. It's sittng on the downstairs furnace.

The guy suggested that if you are at all mechanically minded....yeah...you can get away with the grill lighter trick to get you through the tough nights....just turn the thermostat of to like 80 degrees...and yeah...it won't come back on again....so you might have to do it multiple times. But that beats frozen pipes and frozen ass.

I want my baby back, baby back, baby back....Chileeeeee's bay back...

Hey guys got the part and installed it. Automatic heat. I picked up a spare too. Thanks slick301 for offering to meet me half way on the part. Sorry I didnt take you up, but I didnt feel like driving for a 50% chance at the right part.

I'd like to especially thank SPUD for offering his crib to me and my family. You better be luckily I didn't take you up. You got a nice house. Add 3 under age 14 kids and you would be like...you are no longer invited over my crib. Thanks Bro. BTW. Sorry the sliders didn't fit.
