Help, wife collected $1000 worth of parking tickets... - January 28, 2015, 09:25 AM

Long story short: she was driving one of my cars as her car to DC to work every day. She got a whole bunch of $30 tickets, didn't pay all of them off and now I find out I have a balance of $910 between original tickets and late payment penalties.... Yay!

My question: the paperwork does state that it's too late for me to do anything but pay in full, but I wonder if I can go to court and make a case where I didn't know jack shit about this and ask to at least pay "only" the original fines??? Or??? FML...

I would rather pay the tickets and the late fees then go to a DC traffic court. Plus this way the Wiffy has 900$ of I fucked up payments

Yeah I am old enough to know better. Thing is, I just don't care.

DC traffic court is a pain, their hours suck, and not keen on giving breaks, unless you have photo proof that it was not illegally parked. You end up in a small room with one 'judge' and 12 other people looking for breaks, and basically none are given, hell none can be in that situation because then the next person in line is going to want one. Only one person can go in, so with the car in your name, you would. Then you ask to bring in the wife as she was driving, explain you didnt know, they will say she did, and you have to pony up the cash.

D,C. will eventually report the past due amount to the credit agencies. You will want to pay these tickets before that happens, as they will be a pain to remove once listed. Might as well not pay them at that point.

If the ding on your credit rating is not important to you, just order up a new set of plates from the VA DMV and start fresh, and resolve to never again rack up parking tickets.

The way it stands your car can be booted or towed with that many tickets assigned to that plate. Don't leave it parked anywhere in the city until this is handled one way or another.

Good Lawd!!! I thought the $217 in Richmond City tickets I racked up (and just paid off) was bad...

I would pay it all off, god forbid you get a call from her stating there is a boot on her/your car one day (Which is the main reason I forked over the cash and didn't fight mine)

Welcome to DC.
$50 parking ticket. Not paid or contested in 30-days.
LEVEL UP
They slap another $50 penalty on top of it and $10 administrative fee.

Leo, sorry to hear this. DC's DMV is not very lenient about these things.

You can try to throw yourself at their adjudication department and say the car was being used by "a friend" while you were out of the country (not an usual excuse in a transient - fluid populace city like DC) and had no idea there were aged parking tickets on your tags.

They may partially reduce the late penalties ... may.

Or keep an ear to the ground and wait until the next ticket amnesty week. This is when they remove any fees and penalties in exchange for paying all original fines.

If the record stays current to its trend, DC has an amnesty week when their is a change in Mayor. Of course it's a little bit of good from the new Mayor, but mostly as a way to try to incentives heavy hitters to pay off fines.

I suspect there may be one coming in the next few months. D.C. is going to have to take an unbudgeted $50MM charge for not paying Firefighters overtime.

There is some fine wisdom in this statement.

BZZZZZZZ. Wrong.

Sorry, doesn't work like that anymore.

DC now reports to other jurisdictions. Your new jurisdiction in turn puts an administrative hold on your new registration and plates.

Now you've compounded your pain. You have pay DC's fines and then pay your current state's DMV to release the administrative hold.

Just pay it. Probably in the minority here but sounds like your wife messed up by getting a bunch of tickets and then messed up again by hoping it would go away. What's there to fight? It's not like the court cares who parked the car there.
