Holiday airline travel rant - January 3, 2010, 05:19 PM

Figured I'd take a fairly cheap ticket and run home over the new years weekend, so I grabbed flights with American Airlines from SAT to IAD...holy crap what a mistake.

AA took it to a new level. Never left the gate on time, had 4 flights, two connections...every flight left late, 2 had delays of over an hour and a half. Aircraft swaps, mechanical issues, extremely poor time management while they were fixing problems, and truly ****ty customer service by the Flight Attendants.

I honestly don't expect much while flying cattle class, toss me some peanuts and a cup of diet coke while I listen to my ipod and I'm content...and they did that, but apparently asking for a diet coke at 9am was akin to punching this woman's child since she was only serving OJ and coffee...neither of which i drink, the 15ft walk to the galley was a lot to ask I guess.

I've tried to avoid Delta, AA, and United to some degree, from my own experiences and horror stories, but I figured it was just bad luck, 4 legs this weekend, 3 were just terrible, back to my boycott.

not to just pile on AA, but overall customer service from a Flight attendants standpoint is just dead as far as I can see. They really want to nothing to do with you...and I'm not a needy customer, I never ask for anything unless they are coming by with the drink cart, but the general attitude towards passengers is just awful, if you hate your job so much, quit!
ok rant over, I recommend no one ever fly AA if you want to get anywhere on time or enjoy the flight even a little.

it was nice to see a lot of folks NYE, Kim, I love you, I'm sorry about your tree...no wait, I'm not, it was hilarious

Confusing the issue, since before you were ugly.

4 legs, 2 connections - on a holiday week? You should have known you were setting yourself up for FAIL.

Fly direct or make one connection maximum always.

sorry, i wasn't clear enough, 1 connection each way, Dallas so, SAT-DFW-IAD, and the reverse today, 4 legs for the whole trip

and direct flights aren't always possible for some of us, my base is out in the middle of the desert and direct flights to Dulles aren't possible usually through San Antonio, which is, at 3 hours the closest major airport

also, TSA and airport security was fantastic this weekend, just as a note, took me 15 minutes this morning to get through, the longest wait by far and that was just sheer volume...usually TSA at dulles sucks, but they recognized the volume of passengers this morning and opened all screening gates, moved right through

I have a very simple saying when traveling CONUS. If Southwest isn't going there, neither am I. I've had 2 delays in all the SWA flights I've taken over the years. That includes holidays and other crap.

Just so you know Craig, there is a direct flight from BWI to San Antonio and a onestopper out of IAD.

true, but BWI is an hour plus drive tacked on, I'd rather take the connection, other than AA, its been far faster because i tried the BWI route when i first got down here

Southwest is my preferred route, I agree completely, unfortunately that flight was full

Continental has been pretty good, hope from either here in Del Rio or Sat to houston which is a nice airport, straight to dulles...I just won't mess with AA or DFW again, holy crap, after you land its 20 minutes to taxi to the gate!

listen polesmoker, until this weekend the layover made the time about equal, and its a hell of a lot nicer to have the 6 mile drive to my Ashburn than an hour and a half drive through 95 and 495 traffic

I didnt have any problems with my flights this holiday season...oh wait yes I did...they were all cancelled but that was because Mother Nature is a filthy C and deciding to unzip the sky and dump 2 feet of snow on DC the day I was flying to Florida.

But with that being said security leaving DC was actually pretty damn fast...even though the airport was PACKED with scrambling people trying to get out of town the night before the storm (much like myself).

Glad you came up for the weekend dude! It's was good to have to Ashburn crew together on New Years. The tree incident was funnier the next day...watching Stillie try to get all that shit off the tree the next morning while I heckled from the back deck

I used to love to fly. Now it's just a frustrating mess. I try to drive everywhere or if i don't need a car (New York City) i take a bus or rail. F the airlines.

Eh, my dad and I got stuck in Florida for 9 hours trying to fly back here from the Sebring 12hr race in 2003. We boarded, waited around, ate peanuts, were told the plane was broke, unboarded, sat around outside the gate, got on another plane, plane had broken part, got off, they got new part from other plane, but was also broke, so we got free McDonald's vouchers, then finally they cobbled 1 working plane together, or found a new plane, and we got to come home. That shit sucked. F Southwest Airlines
