Home Security Cams - August 10, 2013, 01:14 AM

I'm looking to update my home security. I'm familiar with the usual CCTV cams with the HD DVR, but everyone seems to be using the IP ones recently.

I did some research and came up with this:
Amazon.com: Dropcam HD Wi-Fi Wireless Video Monitoring Camera: Camera & Photo Amazon.com: Dropcam HD Wi-Fi Wireless Video Monitoring Camera: Camera & Photo
Amazon.com: Dropcam HD Wi-Fi Wireless Video Monitoring Camera: Camera & PhotoAmazon.com: Dropcam HD Wi-Fi Wireless Video Monitoring Camera: Camera & Photo

Everything is cloud based-DVR ($10/month) and it saves up to 30 days worth. 720p, two way audio, etc. I read it uses about 60GB/mo in bandwidth, which isn't a problem but it's worth mentioning I guess.

Has anyone here used one of these yet? If so, feedback? Alternatives?

Thanks!

Drop cams are nice but if you lose Internet you lose the recording.

I would recommend logitech alert.

I recommend whatever Aaron Hernadez installed.

We just got three of the DLinks. Started with one, liked it ao mich got two more. Forgot the model number but they were $150 each with IR and motion detection recording. You have to get mini sd cards for them which is not too bad. You can set it on continues recording where it will write over the card when it's full as well. You can also put it on motion detection and set the detection zones so it won't pick up the dogs and such. It will send you emails if it detects anything and all of their services are free. No monthly contract. The apps for your phone and tablet are free as well. Also it takes 10 minutes to set up.

Here is a picture I took of my living room from one of the cameras just now. And I'm on the shitter at the Dulles airport lol

looking into the logitech alert, does the alerting work only with logitech's subscription services or can it be set up to use any email service?

Thanks! I will try the Logi Alert.

I'll also look into the DLink stuff and will probably pick up one drop cam as a redundant backup or something. Thanks for all the input guys

Oh I forgot to mention. You can get the standard non 720p DLink cameras without motion detection for like $99. They have 5 or 6 different models. They even have one you can remotely control (up/down/side to side) for under $200. You just use one app to control all.
