Honda Accord Axle Nut Will NOT Break - April 25, 2011, 09:36 AM

Begin rant:

This passenger side axle bolt will NOT break anything but Advance Auto Parts 24" breaker bars!!!!!!!!!!

I've been through 2 of these things and this bolt will not budge!!!!

No air tools available... No shade either....

Next step:
Torch to the bolt and then another breaker.... Sigh....

End rant.

Thanks for reading.

Impact wrench. Sorry, it's the only way. That and maybe some heat. You can rent electric impact wrenches, you know. Cheap too. Go for the 3/4" drive size and bang that sucker off of there.

Heat it up with a torch then dump about 1/4 can of penetrator on that bad boy. Let it sit for about 30 minutes - more if you can. Then come back and have at it.

Been looking into those... But I can't seem to find anything that can exert more force than I can with a breaker bar.
Of course there is that "impact" versus "semi-slow" torque.... But at half the torque applied yet "impacted" will it actually do any good???

For clarification: Me @ 210lbs on the end of a 24" bar = roughly 420ftlbs of "semi-slow-bouncing" torque.

Electric Impact Wrench @ 240ftlbs of "impact" torque....

Will it make the difference? Sigh.... I gotta buss this nut!!!

LOL... Yeah, that was the fate of the 2nd breaker bar.... Thankfully these things are lifetime warrantied.... Even though they are useless for this particular job...

Impact will be better than you with a breaker bar.

Aside from that, last time I had to get an axle nut off an accord (1990 accord) had to use a cutter/bolt splitter. PITA, have to be careful not to damage the threads.

This might be the root problem. Roll over to sears or flag down your local snap-on truck and get a real breaker bar

Word Life. Definitely learned my lesson here.

Tried to pick up a 3/4" driver yesterday but they didn't have the socket there to go with....

Here is a way to get the nut off. Go to wal-mart staples...whereever. Get a can or two of compressed air (dusting stuff for computers) Go home heat up the nut (try not to heat up the bolt too much and focus the heat on the nut, once the nut is really hot, turn the can of compressed air upside down and quickly spray it on the center of the bolt (not the nut), make sure to use the plastic hose to direct it to the center of the bolt...this will cause the bolt to cool and shrink much faster than the nut and it should break loose fairly easily. If it does not do not use a longer breaker bar, all you will do then is snap the bolt and be screwed (see what I did there? LOL) even worse!

I was going to say the same thing. I know in unique situations I have take tie down straps, a long 2x4, and used tire irons to make a splint. If you cant get it with a 6 foot long breaker bar you have bigger issues.

If it truly is that bad the penetrator is going to be pointless, you will probably be replacing the stud.

Heat and PB Blaster....a prayer and some brute.

Good Luck.

(I like the heat/freeze w/ compressed air trick...)

I don't have a pneumatic impact wrench, but this what I use (link) on these sorts of things. It works REALLY well.
