The Hot Zone, Contagion, virus stories.. Reston - September 14, 2011, 03:36 PM

Gonna go see Contagion but reading the synopsis I was reminded of a book I read a long time ago about the Ebola virus... it's kind of a 12 monkeys read except it actually happened. Pretty knarly stuff and survival rates for the worst strains are like 1 in 20 (Ebola Zaire)... everyone basically gets turned into liquified RNA as the virus destroys your cells to replicate.

Anyway there was a strain that popped up back ni '89 quite close to home and it was named Ebola Reston. It effected monkeys only, and didn't jump species. Happened right off the Toll Road and Weihle Ave north. The monkey house got torn down, it's a day care center now. Little local trivia I thought was cool.

Then signs of Ebola start to appear. An Ebola patient can have blood standing in droplets on the eyelids and running from the tear ducts down the face. Blood can flow spontaneously from the nose, mouth, vagina, and rectum. The testicles swell up and are often destroyed. Ebola causes people to vomit masses of black blood with a distinctive appearance of “coffee grounds.” As blood vessels burst and blood seeps into the skin, a spotty, bumpy rash spreads across the body, while small, star-like hemorrhages appear beneath the skin. There is incredible abdominal pain that cannot be relieved. Finally, after about 10 days, most sufferers mercifully fall into a coma and die.

Yea I put a google maps linky up there if anyones interested in where it actually sat. The Hot Zone book is great, starts with the first instance of the hemorrhagic virus in Marburg, Germany all the way to Reston. Crazy stuff.

Great thing about Ebola is it kills it's victims so fast it hinders its spread. If not, Africa will be fucked right now phew!

Unless you are very close to the victim when they die. You can get it from them as they bleed out of every orifice

Another good book - One Second After.

Not related to catastrophic viruses, etc. But still a kind of apocalyptic view....without a real visible event causing it. (In this book it was EMP pulse.)

I didn't know youse guys could read!!!

I liked the book. Read it a few times. Interesting to think about what would happen if that shit started getting spread human to human here. With the population density, could be real bad real fast

Hell yeah, the monkey house!! I remember when they had that place wrapped in plastic for years. All of Issac Newton Sq was closed off. As kids, we used to climb over the fence and go poking around. Yeah, I was a smart one.
