How "Captcha" Has Been Using You As An Unpaid Document Translator - September 26, 2011, 12:52 PM

If you have signed in to basically anything on the Internet these days, then you're most likely familiar with the whole CAPTCHA program. That's the thing where you have to prove you're not a spambot by typing some nearly unreadable words into a box:

What you may not know is that by using it, you've most likely contributed to the translation of thousands of old documents.

In 2009, Google and a couple of other companies had a problem. They wanted to digitize years of old newspapers and books, using software that can "read" the print it's scanning and then convert it into actual text. But even the most advanced computers had problems reading some of the poor quality scans, because the text was smudged or crooked, or in a font that has been out of use for years.

So, they simply placed those unreadable words in between you and your porn, and told you that you'd need to translate them before going any further. Spambots can't read them because reCAPTCHA uses only the words that the computers already said they couldn't read. It's as brilliant as it is simplistic. The program is called reCAPTCHA, and you've probably seen it this week, if not today. It's currently used by Facebook, Ticketmaster, Twitter, 4chan, CNN.com, StumbleUpon, Craigslist, the U.S. National Telecommunications and Information Administration and thousands of other smaller sites.

if computers can't read the text, then how does it know you typed in the correct word?

first person to see the text gets a free ride, then you actually have to get it right as people start answering the same thing.

also, one of the words is always a known word, one is always an unknown.

Go to 4chan and look for Operation Re-*n-word*

They are attempting to use this tactic to convince google that all the unknown words are the n word

BWAHAHAHAHA!!!
Fucking genius. I mean clearly racist, but in a genius way. '

Now someone tell me how I can set up Google to pay me everytime someone looks up the "n" word.

ya, old news.. But also.. BRILLIANT !!

Whoever thought to do this had a stroke of pure genius.
Provide a free service delivering scanned images and then use those images utterly unobtrusively to decode said poor scanning using the best machines for it, humans! You send that image to thousands of users and and base your translation on the most wins. Service gets a free security tool, humans get less spam shot at them, and recaptcha gets translations. win win win..

Its no secret, they tell you right on their website exactly what they are doing and its up to the service using it to decide if that's ok by them. Which it always is cause what the hell does it hurt??

i dont get it tho....

like if they had some old ass text that actualy said...

"Castle"
and it was hard to read and you type it in... dont the computer have to know from the start that the password was castle? I mean if the first one was easy...say
"white......castle"
It still wont work until you type both in right...

Von, no

WIth recaptcha, you only have to type one of the words in correctly... the one that the computer KNOWS

The one that they want you to translate for them, you can type in wrong, and it'll let you in.

In operation Re-n-word, they type the first word in correctly, then type the N word in for the second word. And it lets them in.

Or maybe it's the second word they type in right. and the first is n-word.

not sure, but either way... one of the words need not be correct for the system to let you in
