How to Embed Video - August 11, 2015, 10:47 AM

Here's a guide, mostly for myself. I thought I made this thread already but my search can't find it. I always end up trying every fucking combination of URL except the correct one.

So here's a guide by Heist

LMAO.

It's simple.

Step one: You have to find the FULL old version URL, not the new shorten versions. This typically means opening your browser and copying the URL, not using the "Share link" shortcut the app or on screen hotlink gives you.

(remove the *'s when you try this. )

CORRECT VERSION: ht*tps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Axe5ZkIV4QE&feature=youtu.be

INCORRECT VERSION: ht*tps://youtu.be/Axe5ZkIV4QE

Step two: Once you have the link, you're going to have to do a little quick trimming so it embeds on this site.

ht*tps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Axe5ZkIV4QE&feature=youtu.be

First, get rid of the "S" on the end of https. This site will not embed secure links.
It should now read: ht*tp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Axe5ZkIV4QE&feature=youtu.be

Next step, delete the extra characters after and including the ampersand.
ht*tp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Axe5ZkIV4QE&feature=youtu.be

The characters in GREEN are what you need. This is the Video ID. The characters in RED are unneeded for this site and will cause the video not to embed and instead turn into a URL.

Finally, double check your syntax. The end should always read /watch?v=VIDEO ID

ht*tp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Axe5ZkIV4QE

Once that's done, post and voila

Protip: So long as you can remember this phrase: "ht*tp://www.youtube.com/watch?v= " you can plug in ANY video ID and it will embed provided the video is not private or the owner disabled embedding. For instance your original INCORRECT VERSION: ht*tps://youtu.be/Axe5ZkIV4QE, the only part I would need is the Axe5Z.. and I could write out the embed phrase on here without needing to hunt for the long form old version of the URL.

LMAO @ the 'sex videos' tag.

remove this symbol (*)

(3) Hit Enter. Watch the magic happen.

Now you know ....

I hear you man, I just figured out how to embed them after wrestling with the links for a couple of weeks.

Addendum:

Video ID's (as of 2015) will always be a string of alpha numeric characters.

If you hit a symbol inside the string (&, #, *, %, etc.). stop. These are markers that will not allow to embed. Delete it and everything to the right of this.

Also this site does not support time marker embedding. Time markers allow the video to start at the precise time or portion of the video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=14&v=DnEe4oaSC88

In the example above the t=14, means the person wanted the video to start-up at 14 second mark. However, this site can't interpret this for embedding purposes.

Thanks to heist for the following tips on GFYCAT videos:

Can't get this to appear like a youtube video.
With Gfycat you have to change a few things and it will embed like a .gif

Step (1)
http://zippy.gfycat.com/FaithfulHugeHart.mp4
Change the .mp4 to .gif so it reads

http://zippy.gfycat.com/FaithfulHugeHart.gif

Step (2)
Use the image tags (remove the *)
[*img]http://zippy.gfycat.com/FaithfulHugeHart.mp4[*/img]

Step (3)
If the gif does not appear, change what I call the prefix. "Zippy"
[*url]http://zippy.gfycat.com/FaithfulHugeHart.mp4[*/url]

GFY cat uses three prefixes at this time; "zippy", "fat", and "giant".
Giant seems to work most often but at times you'll have try the other too.

New URL should now read:
http://giant.gfycat.com/FaithfulHugeHart.gif

Put it back in the image tags, hit post and voila!
