Anybody out here driving a hybrid? If so what are you driving? What is your opinion on that, do you wish you would have made another choice? Etc...

Hybrid - May 11, 2013, 10:26 PM

I bought a Prius C in march and love it. It barely gets up to speed and crawls off the line, but it gets me around at 60mpg. It's marketed as the entry level Prius but i think it's essentially a hybrid Yaris. I guess Toyota figured a cheaper Prius would be a better sell than an upscale Yaris. Batteries are covered up to 8 years/100k miles. Other Prius models have more power, and better battery warranty in CARB states, but also higher price tag I wasn't willing to pay.

Fuck a hybrid dude. They are painfully slow.

Get a diesel if you want to be gay about mpg.

BMW 335d. 40mpg highway, 0-60 in 5.4 seconds.

A VW tdi gets around 45mpg average. Same as a gay hybrid, with none of the gayness.

This

Diesel gets such a bad rep for being 'dirty', but some of the euro VW's get close to 70mpg.

I think it's the Lupo diesel that top gear uk tested and got 70mpg while driving the same way in a Prius got 40 something mpg.

Diesel Hybrid is the most intelligent choice.
For years I never understood why car manufacturers kept pairing the inefficiencies of gas powered engines with electric drivetrains when diesel electric has been perfected and in use since the 1930's?!

Well, finally, Volkswagen, has stepped up and released the D+H cars in America.
TDI Clean Diesel & Hybrid Cars - Volkswagen of America

Edit: Crap! VW's Hybrids are gas only. WTF? Why is it so hard for they morons to take an electric drivetrain and drop in a Diesel engine?! 30 city and 60 highway almost all but guaranteed.

Another plus one for a diesel.

We bought the live in house servant (girlfriend) a 2011 VW Golf TDI (turbo diesel) a couple years ago. She averages about 40 mpg mixture of city / highway driving. We got damn near 60 taking it from here to Atlanta one time.

It's a fun little car too. Plus you can keep a small measure of your dignity. Not that I recommend men driving VWs.

The Jetta hybrid sounds gay enough for me to rock, I'd buy one for sure. I wonder when it'll be available.

I really appreciate the thoughts. I never even considered a diesel initially, but that may get there too. I never considered a Prius honestly, I started looking at something a little more "luxurious" like the Lexus GS hybrid, etc.. Correct me if I am wrong, but can you put an audio system in a hybrid vehicle? (I love my systems)

I really and truly want a F250/350, but I am tired of the $100 fill ups in my f150 and lack of gas mileage so the bigger truck is out of the question.

Don't buy one and assume you can use it during HOV hours by yourself.

Quote:

Hybrid rules on Interstates 95/395:
  • Hybrid vehicles with clean fuel plates issued before July 1, 2006 are allowed to use the I-95/395 HOV lanes during HOV hours (6 a.m.-9 a.m.; 3:30 p.m.-6 p.m., Monday through Friday). During these times police will ticket any hybrid vehicle that does not have three people on board or a clean fuel plate issued before July 1, 2006. See news release for details.
Hybrid rules on Interstate 66:
  • Hybrids with clean fuel plates issued before July 1, 2011 are allowed to travel in the HOV lanes on I-66 during HOV hours (Inside the Beltway, all lanes are HOV-2 from 6:30 a.m.-9 a.m. eastbound, 4 p.m.-6:30 p.m. westbound, Monday through Friday. Outside the Beltway, left lane: 5:30 a.m.-9:30 a.m. eastbound, 3 p.m.-7 p.m. westbound, Monday through Friday.) with one occupant. During these times police will ticket any hybrid vehicle that does not have two people on board or a clean fuel plate issued before July 1, 2011. See news release for details.

That rule never made any sense. Hybrids do better in stop and go traffic so let's get them out of the stop and go traffic and put them in HOV.
