Hypothetical Situation - June 5, 2008, 03:04 PM

You are the owner of a well-established deli in the NOVA area. Let's say...Santinis, in Oakton. Anyways, while in your deli you lose your $500 phone along with all the stored business contacts, family photos, etc. Two customers happen to find this phone, on the ground, and gladly return it to you at the counter. Now, do you...

A. Offer a sincere thank you (perhaps a complimentary meal as well) because that is the least you could do?

or

B. Say, "Hey that's cool", pat the good samaritan on the shoulder, and simply walk out of sight?

P.S. Next time I find your phone I am going to smash it off the floor and leave it on the table for one of your bus boys to pick up. You're Welcome!

"good samaritan" - you said it. The Good Samaritan did not expect a reward, did he?

No good deed goes unpunished or unreported?

You can't be one if you go into the venture expecting a reward - that would be cell phone retrieval for hire or ransom...

just a hypothetical answer of course Justin...

you don't do good deeds to benefit someone else - you do it to for yourself by BEING a good person...

i found a guy's wallet in a bathroom stall and when he knocked on the door and I replied that I had found his wallet(which had a couple hundred $$ in it), he had the nerve to tell me that "you're a good man and will be rewarded for this" and then he walked out. I guess the universe will reward me. I didn't expect, nor would I have accepted a reward, but to have the nerve to say that to me without offering is the epitome of arrogance.

If it were me, I'd probably offer up a footlong chicken philly or even a large pie with the toppings of your choice. If I just said thank you, I'd hope that would be enough.

Wasn't there a story on here just a few weeks ago about the guy who found a chick's bag with a camera, cell phone, PDA, etc. in it and he returned it.......

Yup, that was me. Also, I wasn't looking for a reward and even tried to refuse it. She insisted though.

I was kinda thinking this too, dude.

I guess that's what kharma is for. The thing you did should make you feel good (about yourself, your honesty) not bad because he was ungrateful. Not even a thank you?

I'd just say thank you and I'd only expect a thank you in return if I did the same thing. No need for a reward for picking something up and returning it.

Definitely was NOT looking for a reward, and had one been offered I would have refused. I just think even a simple thank you would have been nice. This guy couldnt have cared less. I guess you had to be there, but we gave it back too him and he was like eh, whatever, and walked away. Very little to no appreciation whatsoever. I only brought up the food as a bit of a joke considering he had an entire restaurant at his disposal.

We all know that there's plenty of people in this world who don't know how to thank you for your gracious actions.
