I got fired... - October 10, 2008, 12:44 PM

I'm extremely pissed off about this. I left 1-1/2 hours early yesterday so that I could go get a copy of my criminal record for the fire department. I come out from the records department to a voicemail from my job. It's the owner of the company saying that he needs someone who works 40hrs a week every week. It just so happened that I was sick on Mon. and Tues. with doctor verification. I always work my 40 if not more and I reiterated this to him and his response was that it's always something with me referring to me being sick at the beginning of this week. Also trying to back his statement up he mentioned when I missed 3 days in july because my girlfriends 8yo daughter was in a motorcycle accident and airlifted to the hospital. He said it's always something with me and obviously I have more important things than my job. Am I wrong in thinking this is a BS excuse and the real reason is jobs arent coming in? I mean seriously leaving 1-1/2 hours early so I can do some volunteer work a good reason to fire someone? Sorry, I had to vent. Anyway can anyone get me a job?

Hell with that! You don't want to work for a company that puts itself before your family!!!!
What line of work are you in? I'm sure someone on here knows something! Also, post your resume on Careerbuilder and search on Craigslist. I found my job there too.

what kind of work do you do?

before i offer my opinion, i have to ask...did you get permission to leave 1 1/2 hours early? if you didn't, then i have to agree with your boss to an extent, because if they were looking for you or relying on you to do something and you're not there..that's consider awol. however, i think firing you is a bit harsh unless there's a trend here that we are unaware of. seeing how you've already taken 2 days off this week, regardless of reason, your trip to the records department could have waited for another week or so. afterall, it's a "VOLUNTEER" job. you have to ask yourself, "was it worth it?" don't get me wrong, i applaud you for wanting to volunteer but your priority wasn't there this time.

sorry if i sound like an asshole but you did ask for opinions.

Did your boss know ahead of time before you "left early"?
If not that would be a reason why, VA is a "right to work" state so he can fire you for whatever reason he wants.
Good luck with your job search.

You were already in the shitter. He was waiting for you to do something he didn't like. Consider the job a lost cause anyway, cause if it wasn't now, it would be two months from now.

You have to be able to live with your job.
