I'm super duper facked. - April 1, 2011, 06:24 PM

Ok so here is the full story, I mosey on over to the DMV to register the new bike so I can maybe ride it this Sunday. There was no line so I'm at counter in like 5 mins, it was too good to be true. Lady told me I need to either show proof of insurance for some old ass van I bought last year or file a SR-22 for every single vehicle I have.

So here is the story on the van, I bought it last year because I though it might be useful at work. The van turned out to be a hunk of junk and I ended up selling it to a dude who said he was gonna fix it up. Me being a total dope I never turned in the plates to the DMV. Now the DMV wants proof that I had insurance coverage on the van during that period. I didn't! Because I wasn't driving it and the dude who bought it never got it running so he didn't bother to get it registered.

Now the DMV wants me to file a SR22 for every vehicle and pay a $500 fine for each one. I have 5 vehicles registered. FML

HAPPY FRIIIIDAAAY!!!

Do you have any proof that the vehicle was sold? I have a car which I rarely drive and have on an off insurance. The DMV would always send me a letter whenever they checked and found that the vehicle was regisered but uninsured, then they would give you 30 days or so to either provide proof of insurance, or turn in the plates. I would always just add it to my policy, send them a copy of the card and they would drop it.

wtf? why $500 for each one? sorry I don't know how to help you, but the uninsured motorists' fee at vehicle registration is $500. I can't fathom how they'd charge $500 for each vehicle you've had. I assume you've had insurance for those? and have proof of it?

Been there. You're screwed.

The $500 is a license reinstatement fee, because you're license will be suspended without the proof of insurance that you did not have.

The SR-22 bit doesn't actually cost that much but it's a hassle for a few years if you ever want to register any other vehicles. No more 30 day "we take your word for it" grace period, you need proof of insurance at the counter.

Unfortunately, I've been in your shoes. Similar situation, with a pickup truck. Apparently if the vehicle is titled and registered it must carry insurance. Since I did not renew the insurance on my p.o.s., it sat it for months and unknowingly to me, DMV pulled my license. I found out about my license being pulled months later when I was pulled over after a cop ran my tags at a traffic light.

Long story short, you're screwed. Either pay up or get revoked. Total BS!!

Lol yea guy....totally fubar. The sr-22 bit is gay and most insurance companies will charge you a filing fee to have it and ur rates may go up a bit. The filing fee with progressive is $50 and the filing fee with permanent general is $75. Each vehicle requires the sr-22. It gets real gay if u don't have a vehicle because you are still required to have sr-22 on file....so you have to find an insurance company that will insure your license dumbest phone call ever. The sr-22 is attached to the license......hence the reason for everything else.

I never once turned in my plates in VA and probably went through 8 cars in 12 years and personalized each one multiple times.

Virginia FT ... oh wait what?
Another Virginia fucked me over story. Wonderful.

Why if you don't have insurance for one vehicle, do you have to pay a FINE on all 5? What kind of shit is that?

And let me guess, the SR-22 is some other kind of Virginia fleecing scheme?

Must be. Because D.C. lets you get away with paying a measly $210 a month fine per vehicle.

Oh, wait....... that would be over $2000 per vehicle. He has 5?!?!

On the other hand, Harvey; are you sure it isn't a FR 44? A SR22 is usually for DUI/ DWI and a FR44 is for "high risk".

Lesson learned... Whenever you sell a vehicle you give them the title AT the DMV so they register and title the car under their name officially. Never ever assume they will go and get it registered. Until they register it anything illegal that they do with that vehicle will fall 100% on you.

The most I would recommend in your situation is to get the bill of sale and if you can get it a copy of the signed title. Also get a history of your bank deposits where it shows you actually deposited the amount on the bill of sale. If you took a check and can get a copy of that even better.

Next you're gonna have to escalate the issue to some sort of management with the power to override the system. Explain to them what happened, show all your proof, and be really damn nice about it.

The only remaining option is to contact an attorney. Sorry for this difficulty you're going through man. The system sucks sometimes.
