iPhone 5 Screen Replacement - September 25, 2013, 01:36 PM

Anyone ever replace a broken iPhone 5 screen with an Amazon or Ebay Generic Digitizer & LCD Assembly?

A company called "Orange Hong Kong" seems to be popular; they sell for about $80 and get mostly good reviews. But i wanted to see if any .Netters have had success.

and Before the discussion gets side lined:

Yes, I understand there is a certain level of skill required; but I've repaired things my entire life and understand how to remove and install screws pretty well ...

I had success replacing my iPhone 4S screen with iCracked.com's kit. I ordered it from Amazon to save a few bucks. Very good kit - all the tools I needed were included, wonderful written instructions, and a YouTube video with instructions to follow along (and rewind often). Best of luck.

I'd be more concerned about screen and touch quality. For that price I wouldn't expect anything remotely close to a retina screen.

If it's just the glass and digitizer, most generics are fine so long as you understand what you are receiving is not Gorilla Glass.

If it's the LCD that's cracked, go to Apple this way you will ensure you're receiving their LCD display. However, the total replacement cost may be a level where makes more economic sense to upgrade to a used 5 or the new 5C/S.

I took my phone to the Apple store in Reston... 45 minutes later, the glass was replaced. It's $175 + tax if you don't have AppleCare.

I replaced an iPhone 4 screen with one of the cheap options . No discernible difference in display quality

I'm in NYC right now. Had to ship off 4 iPhone 5Ss to Turkey and had a few regular 5s repaired at this shop that also unlocked the 5Ss for me. They only charge $75 per (front) and do a great job. $80 just for the screen seems much.

Hmmm.
OP -
The 4S is worth ~$250 on the reseller market.
At $175, I would say you've crossed an economic threshold where is makes more sense to upgrade to a new phone and sell the cracked phone for functional parts.

How much do they charge to unlock?

This is about an iPhone 5, per the subject... which is what my response was about.

Point taken. I got sidetracked with all the 4 talk.

If it's just the digitizer and you use screen protectors, go with something cheap. If the screen is broken, don't skimp.

ALL MY HEROES ARE RUSSIAN...GO CAPS!

Well you see, Norm, it’s like this…A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Now, as we know, excessive intake of alcohol kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. And that, Norm, is why you always feel smarter after a few beers.-Cliff Claven

$35 per phone. ATT versions are guaranteed to unlock. They said T Mobile version sometimes doesn't work.

So it's just the Glass that's broken on mine; Everything else is functional.

I do not have apple care or anything.

The part online is $80 which why I was curious. Most repair places seem to charge about double that.
