IPOD gurus...Got a question - February 26, 2007, 10:12 AM

Is there a way to backup all the music on the IPOD? I just bought an externam drive and I would like to backup my ipod onto it. The only option I see is "backup to disk".

Any other programs out there that would allow me to do this?

You can't just pull music off the ipod
You need 3rd party sotware like ephpod or ipod music liberator to do this.

Shouldn't everything on there already be on your hard drive?

I use Limewire.......unlimited downloads for life, for 24 bucks.....plus I have it set up when I download a song and import it into my iTunes.....it automatically saves and backs itself up on my harddrive in it own folder.
Check out Limewire.

If you're using itunes to manage your music library and sync up your ipod, then all your music should already be on your computer. Just connect your external drive, and copy the itunes folder over from your my music directory. Music backed up, problem solved. When you get a new drive and reinstall itunes just throw the backed up folder onto the new drive, and add the directory via the itunes menus. For any of the aac protected content you'll have to authorize the new install/computer to use this music. Shouldn't be a problem as I think you can have up to 5 machines authorized now.

Problem is, I have used more than one computer to place music on my ipod. And you are right. Its up to 5 now.

that's not true.

if you're using a windows based pc it's very easy.

You need to hook up the ipod and explor the drive. go to tools > folder options > view tab and click "show hidden files"

there will be folders on the drive all your music and videos are kept in these folders.

but you could just get it from the itunes music folder and copy those to the external drive.
