Issac Hayes quits South Park - March 15, 2006, 10:11 AM

I know I know its random and stupid, but I was actually impressed by the response of Matt Stone.

Isaac Hayes Quits 'South Park'
Mar 13, 4:33 PM EST

The Associated Press
NEW YORK -- Isaac Hayes has quit "South Park," where he voices Chef, saying he can no longer stomach its take on religion.
Hayes, who has played the ladies' man/school cook in the animated Comedy Central satire since 1997, said in a statement Monday that he feels a line has been crossed.
"There is a place in this world for satire, but there is a time when satire ends and intolerance and bigotry towards religious beliefs of others begins," the 63-year-old soul singer and outspoken Scientologist said.
"Religious beliefs are sacred to people, and at all times should be respected and honored," he continued. "As a civil rights activist of the past 40 years, I cannot support a show that disrespects those beliefs and practices."
"South Park" co-creator Matt Stone responded sharply in an interview with The Associated Press Monday, saying, "This is 100 percent having to do with his faith of Scientology... He has no problem and he's cashed plenty of checks with our show making fun of Christians."
Last November, "South Park" targeted the Church of Scientology and its celebrity followers, including actors Tom Cruise and John Travolta, in a top-rated episode called "Trapped in the Closet." In the episode, Stan, one of the show's four mischievous fourth graders, is hailed as a reluctant savior by Scientology leaders, while a cartoon Cruise locks himself in a closet and won't come out.
Stone told The AP he and co-creator Trey Parker "never heard a peep out of Isaac in any way until we did Scientology. He wants a different standard for religions other than his own, and to me, that is where intolerance and bigotry begin."

You can't really fault someone for that. You believe what you believe. I think Scientology gets a lot of bad press mainly because of the bozos who often times act as their spokes people (Tom Cruise comes to mind)
What's odd to me about Scientology is that it seems, atleast from a surface standpoint, a religion that teaches you how to be "ok" with your material wealth. I think they were quoted as having 10 million members worldwide. I had read that the actual membership numbers were closer to 50,000.
Religion is funny that way. Some people feel the need to assign themselves as "something". I think you can be spiritual and not fit into the confines of modern religion. Others need more than that. That's their choice-

+1 on both accounts. If you look at a picture of Keith I can see the scientologist in him. I hope to take his class either this season or next, probably next, but Ill be looking/listening to him and in the back of my head goin, 'sicentology, really!?'

Successful satire is based on acute intelligence and a desreguard for political correctness, otherwise it's not funny... why would you expect an unitelligent response?

You can't fault someone for chiming in on all kinds of jokes that make fun of other religions...But when his religion comes under the crosshairs, he immediately gets upset and quits? You SHOULD fault him for that. I agree with Matt Stone - The guy is a fraud for cashing paychecks on episodes that dealt with religious tones before this, but then quitting when Scientology comes under fire.

His quote - "Religious beliefs are sacred to people, and at all times should be respected and honored," he continued. "As a civil rights activist of the past 40 years, I cannot support a show that disrespects those beliefs and practices."

If he TRULY believed that, he should have never joined South Park in the first place. Basically, he's being overly sensitive. My beliefs about Scientology notwithstanding (*cough* cult *cough*), it doesn't matter in this case. If he was Catholic, and pulled the same thing after NUMEROUS jokes about Muslims, Christians, Jews, etc, then he's still a baby about everything.

What Ben is trying to say is that because he attempts to use satire alot, this "acute intelligence and a disregard for political correctness" applies to him as well. And I think we all know where he stands with that.
