Need help from the Jeep folks.

Considering getting an old CJ5 or CJ7. Prince range of 5K to 7K. Based on CL over the past 6 months, that amount will get one in decent shape..rebuilt..painted...etc..

Have the means to work on it, but want one that I can buy and bound around right away.

Lifted w/big wheels is a must. Full or half doors are ok. Hard top would be nice... bikini top is fine..

example: 1984 jeep cj7


Gonna post on the jeep forum also, but prefer opinions here first.

Anyone willing to visit a buyer with me that knows all the ins and outs to look at the good and the bad. Like if the lift kit is a POS, engine..rust etc..

Opinions appreciated.

I would always go for a CJ7 over a CJ5. Longer wheel base is better especially when you plan on or is already lifted with big tires. More room for the wife, kids, buddies, and so on.

Id like to get another Jeep but i think I'd get another YJ or older TJ. 1991 or newer, fuel injection is desired for the trails.

Why a CJ? Just curious, a TJ can be had for the same $. If you dig the CJ's (which I do) and just want one, FRAME FRAME FRAME!! The 5-er especially had issues around the spring mounts.
The '84 you show has AMC 20 axles. Yes, the same one from the cars they made. Unless it has been replaced, or you intend to, think twice. The '86 changed to D44 rear and a D30 with disc brakes up front.
'72-'76(?) 5's and 6's had outsourced T-18 truck transmissions (4 speed) which is good. The base engine, a 232ci is not. They can be found with the peppy 258ci or even the 304ci, but IMO the 258 is where it is at. The V8 is heavy as hell and puts out less HP than your bike. Power brakes, while drum all around, are commonly found in them too.

Yep, have always dug the CJ's.. So early 80's is the better option?

That looks nice! Especially if all the resto was done well. Mind you, the 20 axle is a weakling, but will do fine. Actually I have seen them with 35's and lockers still hanging on. Even so, a new 44 with a locker will run under $1500 if you grenade the 20. Stick with the manual over the slush- box.
