Just got to meet two great Americans - October 7, 2011, 06:37 AM

I just got to meet the two engineers responsible for the frag 5 door kits and a lot of other survivability enhancements for military tactical vehicles. Many of the systems they've designed have saved countless soldiers' lives in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The frag 5 door kit probably kept my crew from injury when we got hit, and I know for a fact it was instrumental in saving the lives of three of my friends, who were in this truck:

Notice the state of the truck, then notice the fact that the doors are intact.

It was good to meet people who have had a tangible lifesaving effect in the wars. I hope they didn't mind getting a hug from a 6'6" behemoth.

Nope. I'm in Detroit for work, and here at Selfridge they are having a convention with a bunch of engineers about Soldier survivability enhancements for HMMWVs and MRAPs.

I'm looking at some of their material now. In addition to powerplant and suspension upgrades, they are working on a fully encompassing armor kit for the 1151 HMMWV. Up until now, the weak point has been turrets and the bottom. WIth the powerplant and suspension upgrades, a full solution is finally feasible.

Some of their test results are fucking amazing.

Bump to add:

Just met the retired colonel who was in charge of soldier survivability enhancements at the time I was deployed when the frag 5 kit came out. When he was talking to me he seemed to be fighting back getting choked up when he said "Hearing stories like this is why I go to work every morning"

I suspect he must have lost soldiers. What a powerful motivator.

God bless him and his team

The picture i posted isn't my truck, but another guy in my platoon.

The IED that hit my truck didn't do anywhere near that level of damage, but the frag 5 door kit still saved our lives.

Never quite understood why the cabin of the HMMMVs wasn't built like a survivability cell or at least a tub.
The A-10 is probably the best example of this. Light weight but can eat 20mm cannon shells and keep the pilots safe.
Cost, is always a factor - but what is the cost of paying the military death benefits to the family of a fallen solider, or lifetime disability?

“Any man who tries to be good all the time is bound to come to ruin among the great number who are not good. Hence a Prince who wants to keep his authority must learn how not to be good, and use that knowledge, or refrain from using it, as necessity requires”.

- Nicolo Machiavelli 1469-1527
