Just what the hell I'm attempting to accomplish over here... - September 29, 2006, 01:30 PM

Many of you know that I dropped all that I hold sacred and close to me and "moved" to Berlin, Germany to help complete an ongoing job. At the start of October, it will be 4 months that I've been here enjoying the German beer and working my ass off. It has been fun, but I'm really looking forward to having some free time and getting to explore Europe a bit. But, at the very least, here is a small taste of what I've been doing.

At first, I was a little worried about letting people know what I'm doing over here. Especially with the current view of America in most foreigners eyes. Most of the people I've met have been there at one point or another and loved it. However, I haven't heard one good word about our current President yet, and I'm not holding my breath either. But, I digress.

Here are a couple of pictures of the building in various stages since I've been here. More can be found HERE.

And where I spend 10-12 hours of my day.

But, at least I have a decent place to come home to. My flat, or, "The House Ikea Built."

The Living Room

Bedroom

Kitchen

And I drink. A lot.

That is just a running tab of the different beers I've tried. There have been many repeats of Paulaner Hefe-weissbier Dunkel, Lowenbrau Oktoberfest, Franziskaner, Erdinger Dunkel and Schofferhofer Dunkel. The great thing is they come standard in .5L and most beers are at least 5.0% alchahol by volume. The better thing is Germany's purity laws when it comes to beer. It tastes so freakin' good over here.

Check back to the Flickr account often for updates on pictures. I'll update this thread with anything new and huge that happens over here.

nice post, I've dabbled in commercial architecture iver the years, going back to school for Architectual Engineering degree. Germany is a beautiful country and for the most part has very friendly citizens. I highly recommend Cologne Germany if you get a chnage to travel there.

You have to ride (or drive) "the ring" while you're there. You owe it to yourself as well as any other being who has ever enjoyed driving a car or bike. The apt looks nice and chill man

AJ... Do not get lost over there... I repeat... Do not get lost!!!

Truth: Marines are the Ambassadors in Blue, they can be found in all "climes" and place.

...But, do you know how a Marine "rates" the countries and cities he's toured?

...By how easy it is to get laid, get drunk, and get in a fight.

...Go figure.

Nice Post and pics.Did they turn shipping containers into modular
living? Incredible idea if they did and looks roomy as well as like
home away from home. It is very nice there but I did the same as you
and just remain low key about being from here. Overseas is no place to
thump your chest and fly your flag. It's unfortunate but you def. don't need
to arouse a lunatic. Be safe and stay warm it's gotta be starting to get cold at
night. Oktoberfest or Shippingcontainerfest both very cool!

I believe his office is modular, but not his flat.

Nah, I seem to fit in somehow. Close cut hair and general german features (I've been told) somehow helped me stagger my way home from Oranienburger Strasse to my house (approximately 30 minutes walking) without losing a euro. Now, if I could only remember it all. My head is on a swivel, and I've been lucky and met some very nice people over here.

More than ever I miss you guys. I had someone who I could vent with and release my work issues, but that turned "interesting" as of late. I'm left with beer and sitting here on my computer as a means of decompressing after work. I miss riding. I miss hanging out with everyone. I miss being back in the States. I'll be back, eventually. I just can't say when at this point.

And, as Tanya and Ben mentioned, there is plenty of floor space available. I'll even provide inflatabeds if people stop by. It is the least I can do.

Interesting fun fact. My bedroom is ~30m from the spot that Hitler and Eva Beron's bodies were burned after the committed suicide in 1945. It probably explains my recent desire to grow a mustache.

Yes, that is my office trailer. My flat is 500m from the jobsite. Makes for a relatively easy commute.
