Know any good Active Directory Auditing Tools? - February 25, 2013, 02:16 PM

Looking for some advice on Active Directory Auditing and control.

Our company is moving from decentralized directory services toward a central Active Directory install.
Sites will be 6 Academic research facilities and the Headquarters. We undergo financial audits each year which include a relatively basic audit of IT controls and procedures at the Headquarters.

Sensitive systems access is granted through Active Directory groups, and we would like to have a simple way to audit users who are added / removed from these groups. We have been looking at Dell/Quest Active Administrator and it seems to have ALOT of great features, but the biggest drawback is the cost about $16/user for our volume and then 16% annual maintenance. I'm going to be looking to see if there are any comparable products and their cost, but figured since there seems to be alot of IT guys on here, maybe I can get someone with first hand experience with AD Auditing.

Some of the features I liked with Active Administrator:
1.) real time alerts can be setup for group membership changes (or really anything)
2.) The ability to create policies which will "self heal" if an admin inadvertently changes permissions in AD etc
3.) an additional layer of AD backups, with granular per user restore capabilities.

Thanks for any insight you can give.
