"Knowledge Management" - May 16, 2013, 08:08 AM

Anyone out there working in the "Knowledge Management" field? I've got a new director at work and he is interested in establishing a "Knowledge Management" group here. Yeah, this is kind of an amorphous thing but I think what we're talking about is capturing institutional knowledge, improving openness/communication, and things along those lines. So, towards that end I'm looking for decent resources. Anyone have any good journals, web sites, etc for this general area?

Is this a new catchphrase? Sounds like he wants a collaboration site.

I don't think it's a new catch phrase but what do I know... The tools are definitely a big part of it (the team will largely be comprised of IT folks) but I'm wondering about more management/people type things like how do you get folks to be more open/collegial, especially when the environment has been pretty guarded at times.

You rang.

Institutional Knowledge capture through a collaborative web application can be done. Depends on the size of the group/company. You need a core reason to use the application and help capture the knowledge. Otherwise the initiative will fail.

Let me know in a PM what you are looking to do.

Lot of literature on this. Some sources include: American Society for Training and Development; Society for Industrial/Organizational Psychology; Society for Human Resource Management. Knowledge Management is a subset of Organizational Development, so your gonna have to do some digging to get the info you need. Additionally, its not as a clearly defined area as for example, Workforce training, so it may be called something different, depending on where your looking. Some journals include Journal of Knowledge Management, Journal of Applied Psychology, Business Management review etc if you wanna do the whole literature review thing (borring). Hope this helps.

Riz, thanks for those specifics. I will probably think real hard about the whole literature review thing but will probably be unable to find the time.

Thanks all!

And Drupal, Mango, etc. Tons of alternatives. Just a matter of $, resource skills, timelines, and the expected capabilities.

Yep, we'll be on sharepoint for sure. It was just rolled out to the whole agency. That part was decided for me.

Poor bastidge. It's a decent document repository. But it's not the best "collaboration" software. That's more of an afterthought and not the core capability.

Hmm, I haven't had a chance to do anything with sharepoint yet. If it really is ill suited to the task I can push other options through.
