Kung Fu Anybody? - April 21, 2006, 01:09 AM

I know some .net members are dedicated students of the martial arts... hope you enjoy the pix. The pictures might seem kinda boring but this is genuine stuff for those practitioners.

I'm not a practitioner of kung fu, I just happened to sign up for a tour of the Shaolin Temple and surrounding areas in southern China... the Hunan Province I believe.

The Shaolin Temple is suppose to be the birthplace of Kung Fu but don't quote me on the history, my knowledge is only limited to years of watching kung fu movies...lol Excuse the bad text/grammer next to the pictures... just retelling the tour guide's explanation for each pix.

Truth: Marines are the Ambassadors in Blue, they can be found in all "climes" and place.

...But, do you know how a Marine "rates" the countries and cities he's toured?

...By how easy it is to get laid, get drunk, and get in a fight.

...Go figure.

Where did you hook up a Shaolin temple tour? I wanna go! Shaoli is the birthplace of Martial Arts!

Kaneda: I was stationed at the American Embassy in Beijing in 2002. I took the opportunity to go on leave and sight see in the southern Provinces.

LaoTzu 'n Mudawg: Here's some more picks... they're actually limited... mainly because the Chinese government kept a close eye on me during the trip... "basically, they didn't want an American Marine going around snapping all sorts of pictures". I was hoping to meet a genuine monk in person but I got a feeling that they might've been told to keep their distance from the "American spy". Just to get into the country, I had to declare I was an American service member and be issued a diplomatic passport.

Boom: it was kinda enlightening and spiritual... the history and atmoshpere of the places humbled me.

The last picture is not part of the Shaolin Tour. It was actually my Marine detachment at the Great Wall of China. We camped out, barbecued and chilled on corona's. The part of the Great Wall we went too was set up for tourists... it didn't seem like the ancient architecure we see in the movies... but it's genuine.

Here are the remainders. The picture/text were originally for a slide show I emailed to family back home.

I'm glad you guys enjoyed the pix... wish I was able to take more.

I love traditional chinese architecture because it values design over utility. I think Fung Shui is real and lends itself to and energy and atmosphere of a place. Very cool pictures.

That's AWESOME Jonathan... so, what kind of feeling did you have while in this place? Did it feel spiritual??

Hey KANEDA, still want to speak with you about the Kung Fu school you instruct at.

Very nice pics. That was a great opporunity to witness the holy land of eastern martial arts, not to mention one of the oldest cultural traditions in civilization. That's National Geographic magnitude right there!
