Laptop HD help - October 27, 2009, 04:52 PM

How do I know which internal HDs are compatible?

HD in the wifes laptop crashed, need to put a new one in and do so on the cheap, tried to swap out from another Dell, but no dice.

Laptop is a Inspiron 6000.

Attempted donar was a Latitude D800, the RPMs were different 5400 vs 7200.

Just about any SATA HD should work for that.

So the drive from the other laptop should work?

Its literally the same size drive, Hitachi Travelstar.

Do I need to do something special to get the laptop to accept the drive?

Ok, so I need to reformat the HDD? Damn, I was hoping I could basically do a hot swap and run the setup from the other computer. Cool, thanks guys.

Well if your still having issues some drives still use jumpers, some laptops wont detect it if it's on cable select- make sure it's set as the master and not the slave. If that still wont work get into your BIOS settings, under the drive options try to auto detect manually (it should do that anyway on start up with a new drive) some older chips will let you manually enter the info for you HDD.

If your still not having any luck bribe a friend to come over and help you out for some beer or dinner.
