Laptop Reviews - September 9, 2011, 02:02 PM

Had a refurbished HP for a little over 2 years, but it overheated like crazy and the motherboard is shot. Therefore I need a new laptop and I need some help figuring it all out.

Here is what I am looking for:

-Something that streams video well on the interwebs (Netflix)
-Runs Microsoft Office well for gradschool
-Not too expensive (i.e. not $1,500)
-Something that will last around 4-5 years if possible

I don't think I'm asking for much, but apparently these days laptops don't last these days.

Here is one that I have read up on and it seems to fit the mold well:
-Toshiba-Satellite-L755-S5271-15-6-Inch-Laptop

Any thoughts?

Dell Latitudes.

Should be able to snag a decent one for >$1000

We use them exclusively here at my office and they're good. Never really had any hardware issues.

Ping OnelowCubn.

He can usually get you a lightly used magnesium framed, Dell Latitude D800 series that'll do all that and run Win 7 for 1/5th of your budgeted amount.

I've bought 3 from him. All had 2GB of RAM, hi-def screen, Nvidia video card, internal wireless, etc. etc. With the money you save you can upgrade to harddrive to a SSD and max out the RAM to whatever the mother board will handle, and still have enough left for an IPad or something.

I love my VAIO

and all the vaio's i have had before it, could have easily gotten 5 years out of all of them but I like to get a new one every couple of years. Can't find the link to the one I have now but I got it for under 900. 4gb ram, i-7, nvidia graphics card, 16.something screen, full 1080p display(great for full screen netflix) and a backlit keyboard. I'm sure there are other awesome features I'm forgetting but I just picked it up the other day at microcenter

I have an 1110. Good computer. However, i quickly outgrew the small screen, no cd drive, and HDMI video output only. Not ideal as a main work computer.

Ahh so many options. How do you all feel about refurbs? My last was refurbished and I feel like that may be why it pooped out...

The only reason I wouldn't get a refurb is if the computer specs were a generation or two behind... Might not matter to you though. My compaq (subsidiary of hp) was brand new and heated up like a mofo. It melted its own onboard wifi card through regular use in a couple months. In a year the battery no longer held a charge and i just use it for experimentation now lol.

What CPU did you have in yours? Some of them get real hot... I had a AMD Turion X2 which was pretty hot. I think the newer generation of mobile CPUs run cooler.
