Last minute adventure ideas - August 30, 2010, 04:54 PM

OK here is the deal. I am off till September 12th. I want to take advantage of this time by going on an adventure. Unfortunately I'll have to go alone as none of my friends can get off work for that long at this quick a notice (plus most have vacations already planned). So some of my ideas are:

Ride up to Maine. Maybe into Novia Scotia (although I remember the ride report when others did it and they said from here to north NY was boooooring...so would truck the bike halfway)

Autotrain to orlando then ride down to Miami to visit family, then down to the FL keys.

Autotrain then drive to Miami/Keys and take scuba equipment for some diving. (advantage to driving is scuba equipment...plus car runs on french fry oil so basically no fuel to purchase.)

Take the train to Chicago then to Seattle Washington, then fly (priceline since I am flexible on times and such) home. The route through the Dakotas is supposed to be beautiful. I work for Amtrak so the first half of the trip would be free.

Pull a shift (from .com) and drive the truck with bike in back out to Utah, Colorado, etc. (Truck doesn't run of FF oil though. So fuel could get expensive...plus I don't want to sleep in the back of the truck in the heat so hotels would run up the total price).

I want to keep this relatively cheap. I just don't have spare funds for a last minute trip to thailand or columbia. As much as I would LOOOOOVE to do that.

I'm open to suggestions. Plan on leaving tomorrow or Wednesday depending.

Then again... That's just me.

scuba: take your mask and rent the rest locally. Makes travel a ton easier.

snag a last minute deal to the Caribbean - San Juan, Aruba etc. I've seen 4 nights with air for less than $300...

One of the biggest advantages of a last minute trip with multiple locations as options is the ability to look at the long range forecast with some hope of accuracy. Scratch off any destinations with crappy weather forecast and see what's left.

Yea I know. But unfortunately the auto train only goes to Orlando. Wish it went to Miami. Actually I wish it went west. I'd be all over it if it went to CA with maybe a stop in CO or WY.

Cosign. I drove from Miami to visit my brother in Orlando when he was going to school down there.
I almost fell asleep 3x in the middle of day. Flat, straight, scenery never changes, boring as all hell. Worst 3.5 hours of in-state, out of state driving I've ever done.

You have two weeks and that is a good chunk of time to do something pretty darn cool. Especially if you move asap.

I wasn't impressed with Nova Scotia and would only go there again if I could ferry hop further north to PEI, explore more, do some off roading, etc. It is good to do once, though...

Key West is mad expensive. In my opinion, it is no longer worth going there for the price you will pay for lodging. 2 weeks in KW is too long. Rest of the keys is getting expensive as well though there may be some bargains to be found.

I think taking the truck and bike to Colorado or one of those areas in the west would be absolutely spectacular. LoneRider did just that, and it seems like an awesome way to do it.

I would also look at flight costs and see what is available at the last minute. DC often has some good deals to Caribbean islands and if you pick one of the cheap islands, hotel and food will be pretty darn cheap too. (Think PR, not Caymans) Maybe Dominican Republic? It looks kinda poor and rundown, but maybe it's alright, I have never been. I was looking into DR and I know you can rent bikes there and the islands is pretty big, and I'm sure you can Scuba. That seems a lot more relaxing than CO trip and drive. Flying elsewhere will probably cost too much since most tix require 7-14 day advance.

Way to give people time to respond

Whatever, I will post anyway. I have always wanted to do something like this:

Lake Superior Circle Tour | SundayMorningRides.com

Lake Superior is beautiful this time of year:

Have a safe trip home slice

You know, there are some cheap flights from DC to Alaska right now.... (they probably require advance purchase though.)

It's not in stone just yet. One of the beauties of working for Amtrak is I can cancel/change my tickets at the last minute.

LP. I've been to Lake Superior already. Granted I didn't do that loop. I was in Duluth and spent a day at the beach on Superior.

I like the DR idea. Going to check into deals now.

Feel free to keep the ideas coming. I'm all about the last minute trip.

I don't know where people are finding these deals. I can't find chit. I find lots of them leaving a week from now or so. But not much in the leave tomorrow or Wednesday area.

Cheapest one is $499. I always thought last minute and cheap went together. I guess not.

Maybe I'll just fly out to vegas for a few days.

For flights, there are no last minute deals. (except for Caribbean, sometimes.) 99% of the time, all the promos sound good and when you look closer and try to book, they start to look lousy.

It's a shame you don't work for an airline.... well, actually, probably a blessing. I can't wait till they all go out of business and get taken over by some Euro or Asian discounter.
