LCD TV recommendations - February 19, 2009, 08:45 AM

Since I am renovating and buying all new furniture, it's time for a new TV and I thought some of you might have some good advice on LCDs. I'm looking at either 42" or 47". I want a decent one but that being said, I honestly watch less than an hour of TV a month since I am basically only home to sleep. I know it's kinda dumb to even pay for cable when I barely turn the tv on but I still should at least have a decent TV. Not sure yet if I'll be wall mounting it or not. So, anyone have any good or bad experiences with TVs? I don't need a high end system (although Bang & Olufsen has some sexy systems) since it won't be worth it to me.

Just go to Target or Walmart and pick up one of their Phillips or Sony systems. Those can be had for 7-$900 and the offer good quality and resolution.

Considering how little you watch Id stick to the lower priced units, or a best value unit, from costco etc.

Best value for quality has been Sharp Aquos.

Your bargin brands are headed up by VIZIO but you will notice a difference between a vizio and a sharp, between a sharp, samsung/sony/toshiba you will be hard pressed to notice a difference. And all of this is moot unless your watching HD.

Good reviews and tips here.

Do some research online and find the best price and best quality. If you can find the same one at Best Buy sometimes you can press them for price match what you find online. My brother just did that with a new camera.

Bang & Olufsen is the biggest rip off ever.

I love my Samsung 7 series but a also really like the Sony Bravia W series, both are great TVs but the Sony has a nice little feature of having the interactive TV guide even if you're not using a cable box / satellite dish. Samsung and Sony are your two best brands on the market imo.

Oh and if you have a computer with an HDMI port and NVIDIA's amazing graphics technology you can make your fine Samsung or Sony your computer monitor WITHOUT any gaps or distortion. Fits the screen perfectly with amazing clarity and colors. I'm using my Samsung 7 series 42" wide screen HDTV with my Velocity Micro performance laptop... talk about a wet dream for computer enthusiasts... I'd put it on the 56" Sony but I was forbidden

Take it from me, go samsung. if you want something fairly inexpensive try their 550 series or maybe even the 630 series if you want something with better motion. Other than that the sony W series is pretty solid too.

don't get 42" Olevia, the tuner whent bad after one year and their tech support is worthless.
My 42" Samsung has been great on the other hand and had it for over a year now too.

thanks guys! looks like Samsung is the favorite! Basic works for me since it'll be more of a piece of furniture than for entertaining.

Don't forget to get a xbox 360 to go with it. You have to get Halo
