Left lane slowpokes - December 11, 2012, 10:35 AM

Seriously.....when did it become the slow or cruise lane? Did drivers ed change something? Shit is ridiculous..... They just sit there.....nothing in front of them, jus cruising along. Give them the friendly blip from the headlights and they are still oblivious. Make the common switch to the right lane and then they wanna speed up. Really?????? Everyday this is a very common occurance

So seriously folks.....this applies to you

Why ride in it?

This also adds to traffic.....

I'd rather be riding my Bike think'n about God than be in Church think'n about my Bike.

Wasn't there talk a few years ago on the MD side of adding a law against driving like a grandma in the left lane?

From VA code.

Annoying yes, but I have just learned to relax and deal with it. It is not worth me getting upset, because you aren't going to change the behavior of these folks. Slow down, relax and enjoy the ride and pass on the right when an opportunity arises.

OK, time for my latest traffic rant which can be related in a way. Very few cars today have insufficient power to easily keep speed (or at least close to speed) going up hills like the ones on 395. Why do we end up going down at 70 mph and up at 45 mph? This directly feeds into the above, but I have learned that it is going to happen. I don't even bother to pull out to pass someone at the top of the hill, as they just speed up by 10-25 mph going down the other side leaving me hanging in the left lane blocking traffic that wants to go faster. I understand that doing this within reason (say 5 mph, maybe even 10 mph) saves some fuel, but I see no sense in 20 mph + differences.

The more interesting and fuel wasting method comes from the drivers that seem to want to maintain speed, but don't seem to realize they have reached the next uphill slope and slow down to 50 mph, then suddenly do realize they have slowed and mash the gas to get back up to 65 mph in the middle of the uphill. Brilliant.

In the end most of this just boils down to people not paying attention to driving when they are driving. I fear that we are going further and further down this path with active cruise control, lane departure warnings, beeping to let you know you are close to backing into something, and at some point in the future cars that take over the whole process. It will be interesting to see if motorcycles have a place in that world or if we will all just wind up vintage racing our bikes because they can't adapt or meet the laws of the self piloting vehicle that communicates it's intentions to all the vehicles around it.

I think flashing high beams to warn of a speed trap may be illegal.

For some reason I remember hearing that in driver improvement.

No question it's illegal to flash to warn of speed trap/radar.

I just seem to recall that it was also illegal to flash to get someone to move out from in front of you in order to pass.

It is illegal until someone challenges it. It has been proven unconstitutional countless times.

This isnt directed to Va.....its here in Md. too.... Traveling to other states varies....some know the etiquet and stick abide it. More commonly I see folks here in this area on their phones (probably texting) I guess thinking being in the fast lane works for them.

Cellphones are the worst things ever invented......

I have driven in a few other countries and the USA is the only one where assholes sit in the left lane. Everywhere else the people pass and then get over. If you do not they will fuck with you big time. But I have only seen that once. It is pass and then get over all the time.
