Well someone hurry up and make a decision on when to have a "Bust a Cap" day. I live the farthest out so Im not going to plan it. I PREFER to go to NRA or Silver Eagle..Nothing too early or too late. During the week would probably be better after work!

AR experts/know-it-alls: I currently own an AR, but have been itching to pick up one that's piston driven (purposely manufactured that way, not a conversion kit). What are your thoughts on the Ruger SR-556? Piston driven, and comes with some upgraded bits already installed. I've only read good things about them, but wondering if anyone has had a chance to shoot one, or heard anything else about them.

I want one as well, but have not started any serious research yet. All I can say is look for ones that have the upgrade bolt carrier to prevent carrier tilt. I think LWRC does and Ruger might. I played with the Ruger and really liked the balance. The rep offered to bring it over to my place with a case of ammo so I might take him up on that this Spring. I did NOT like the Bushmaster piston gun, it felt too front heavy.

A good debate was going on another board about what to get the wife for home defense. Naturally, one guy said "Get a shotgun since you don't have to aim, just point it."

I FUCKING HATE THAT STATEMENT SO VEHEMENTLY, that I ran an experiment real quick. Still in pj bottoms, I dragged my non shooting boys out for an experiment. Here is what I posted in case anyone is interested.

If you are determined to get a pistol, then as was mentioned, get a .357mag revolver.

A shotgun is NOT A GARDEN HOSE. You can't just point it around the corner and get everything wet. rcwj1975 rebutted his own argument when he stated that unless you are in a mansion, the BG is 15ft away. At 15ft the shot has not spread much so YOU HAVE TO AIM! He is right that when the SHTF, skills drop precipitously in most untrained shooters. Which makes the whole muscle memory of it all that more important. I have seen shooters miss PAPER targets because they are afraid of the shotgun and they close their eyes and yank on the trigger to get it over with. A 12ga is an intimidating weapon to many people.

At 21yds with #9 from my Benelli, it patterned around 11". You damn well better aim and not just point.

My HD gun advice for neophytes are carbine length pistol caliber guns, or 20ga/410ga shotguns. It gives you two hands on the weapon plus the buttstock in your shoulder. That is 3 points of contact to steady it. Longer sight radius facilitates accuracy. A larger weapon platform absorbs more recoil.

I so vehemently disagree with the whole "just point a shotgun at them" that I just dragged my two boys outside for an experiment. I set up a target 21ft away, loaded my Benelli with 5rds of #9shot ( I don't have any #7) said "Go" and started screaming at him to shoot the bad guy. I tried to put a little stress on him. My 17y/o is an indoor kid with no interest in guns and has shot a handful of times in his life, none in the last 5 years or so. So that probably approximates a woman who only has the gun in the house to keep you happy and is not practicing.

Keep in mind the Benelli absorbs much more energy than a lighter pump shotgun. Plus it is a semi, so no pumping which many untrained folks short stroke on when under stress.

Here is the results of 5 rounds at 21ft.

Now, had this been inside at night, without earmuffs, it would have been worse.

I repeated the same experiment with a Beretta CX4 loaded with 11rds of 180gr Federal Hydrashoks.

I took video of the whole thing, but can't post it. Something is acting up either with the camera or my laptop so I can't get it off the camera.

So I would look at carbines like the CX4, a used Ruger PC4/9 I think they were called. Shotguns, look at the Mossberg HS410 or a youth model Remington 20ga
