Lockheed U-2 Flight - 70,000ft (2 Seat TU-2 Trainer) - November 26, 2012, 01:03 PM

- Yes, it's James May, aka, Captain Slow of Top Gear fame.
- No, this isn't from an episode of Top Gear. This was from a TV special called "James May On The Moon", which was made to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Apollo Moon Landings. James May has made several series that are completely unrelated to Top Gear.
- The music is called "Flight" performed by Ty Unwin especially for this show.

Surprisingly the U-2 is still in service. I would have thought the SR-71 would have been around in active service longer than that U-2.

For me it would be like the first time I saw the Grand Canyon-speechless.

It seems so far away from what we see regularly everyday (civilian flight) that it really is an out of the world experience.

Super cool. Sad that my flight school will never see me above 18,000 feet while learning.

SR-71's were pretty expensive to run. Especially compared to the U-2. Totally different types of plane. Speed versus height. Speed is always expensive.

The U-2 has a surprising number of uses. NASA has been using them for decades to test satellite electronics packages before sending them into space. My stepdad worked on lots of weather related projects and loved the U-2's. If they'd used a two seater he would have found some way to scam his way aboard.

Here's a project that's been using the U-2 at NASA for years.

Was the chase car at landing telling the pilot how far above the deck it was?

Probably more cheaper/less casualties to let drones eat missiles instead of outrunning them in an SR-71.

How many drones have taken a missile since the sr was retired?

And no, that is one of the primary arguments against the UAV boom...in a non-permissive environment, they are near useless and will be shot down or otherwise nullified immediately.
