Looking For Southern BBQ Joints - January 15, 2010, 09:14 AM

So a buddy of mine and myself are gonna take a little trip leaving tomorrow to kick off the 3 day weekend in search of some great food. I have one route option heading up into PA and Ohio for some great/epic sandwiches, but I want to entertain the southern route as well in search of some really great BBQ.

I'm thinking mostly of the Carolina's, maybe some parts of Kentucky, and possibly Tennessee. Looking to try and keep the one way travel to no more than 6 hours. Does anyone know of any places that are well worth the travel? (And no I am not referring to Famous Daves, Sticky Bones, or anything of the sort, I'm talking real BBQ.) My sister goes to UNC, so I could always crash at her place if we have to travel farther and end up deciding to stay overnight someplace.

BBQ junkies/connoisseur's, I need your assistance!!!

Nunya, Just found that place from an article. It may have to be the first stop if we decide on the southern route.

Cliff Newzpix has a good suggestion, I hope he pops on soon.
There's a really good place in Woodbridge called Dixie Bones. http://www.dixiebones.com/

Best Burgers down South, hands down.

I have always found the little Maw & Paw shops off the beaten path have the best BBQ.
This the place my parents always stop @..

I know this is mixing it up, but if you get to Cincinnati and are wanting BBQ, the Montgomery Inn is the place to go!

We have been eating there for years. Very good!

They catered a number of family events.

We even got a smoked turkey from them for thanksgiving.

If you ever get down to Owensboro Kentucky, Moonlight BBQ is a definite. It's a BBQ buffet for crying out loud!! It'd be a good 13 hours one way though...

I grew up on Dixie Bones. They catered our engagement party. Best cornbread ever...aside from my momma's!

My Mom and her "friend" just took a trip for the perfect BBQ, no joke. I guess this is what retired people do. Drove from Vegas back here to VA. They flew out. I'll have to ask her the names of the spots they hit.
