Exclamation MAC USERS: Help with MacBook Pro memory!? - August 1, 2008, 06:44 AM

Okay, recently I ordered a 2Gb stick of memory for my MBP to top it out at 3Gb. And before anyone says something, yes i got the right kind of memory, and yes i know that my model can handle a max of 3Gb. So it comes the other day and I go to install it. Put it into the second (empty) RAM bay and close it back up, try to start it up.....and nothing. Screen stays off and the white light in the front simply blinks. Take the additional RAM back out and it powers up fine.

I tried everything I could think of. Reset the PRAM and NVRAM, tried different combinations with the RAM bays to make sure one of them wasn't bad. Nothing. So i go get my roommates MBP and take one of his 1Gb sticks out and put it into mine, fires up no problem instantly recognizing the boost in memory. So i put my 2Gb stick into one of his now empty slots (his came with 2x 1Gb sticks), his at least starts up, but still fails to recognize the added RAM.

At this point I was stumped. So i called newegg and said i think i got a bad stick, and explained everything. They gave me a RA# and a new one is already on it's way. But i'm feaful that the same thing is going to happen again. Any mac users on here have any suggestions or troubleshooting tricks that I haven't tried yet?

Much appreciated!

Oh, here's what I got:

Memory is a 50/50 thing. I haven't had any trouble with adding extra memory to any of my macs as of yet. But it happens no more tricks that you haven't already tried.

Okay, here comes the alternative homer simpson DOH moment. Did you make ABSOLUTELY sure it was seated properly!!!! I had the exact same thing happen when I upgraded the RAM in my MBP and I was freaking out.

The stick of RAM that I figured had to be bad was fine and worked perfectly once I made sure to press it ALL the way in. It may be that the stick of RAM was bad but it could just as easily be that the RAM was not ALLLLLLL the way in.

Yea, it was all the way in. I tried so many different combinations between the two machines, and since when i was swapping around the various 'good' sticks, i got a feel real quick as to how far in they need to go.
