Man Gets an $85,000 Cell Phone Bill - December 15, 2007, 01:47 PM

Man Gets an $85,000 Cell Phone Bill for Modem Use
Fri Dec 14, 2007 12:01PM EST See Comments (111)
We've seen $3,000 cell phone bills. We've seen $10,000 cell phone bills. But now we've got a bill that's approaching six figures, as a Canadian man has been hit with an $85,000 invoice.

And no, it's not a computer error.

Piotr Staniaszek had been using his cell phone as a modem for his computer, thinking he was covered under his $10-a-month unlimited mobile browser plan from Canadian telco Bell Mobility. He actually caught the bill at $65,000. When he called to complain, he was told that it had hit $85,000 for the use since the bill was mailed.

The likely problem is that Staniaszek got understandably confused about what his recently signed $10 data plan covered. Such plans often cover data use on the phone itself (such as texting or using the built-in browser on the phone), but not when it's used as a modem with a PC. (Without going into extreme detail, the connection types are different, and the phone company can tell the difference between the two types of traffic.) Bell Mobility has dropped the bill to just $3,243, but Staniaszek is still fighting it. (Of course.)

Staniaszek also notes that the phone company should have notified him when charges started to spiral out of control; previously he'd gotten a call when he racked up a mere $100 in charges on his old data plan. Now his bill climbs into the thousands and no one bats an eye. I'd be peeved, too.

Remember that all cell phone plans are not created equally, and "data" has numerous definitions. Before you connect your phone to your computer, make sure you understand the charges you're setting yourself up for, and check your usage on your phone company's website periodically (especially if you're using your phone for something new) so that you don't get slapped with any financial surprises.

People should have to take a test before owning 2 things:
A cell phone, and a credit card.

But again, who wants to be anal about reading the ToS or contract for either.

LOL by right... Anyone can own a firearm. Unless you are convicted felon, mental, or abusive towards animals or your woman.
And sometimes, all those come into play...
You should be required to pass a IQ test for either cell or credit card.
That way, your credit line could based off of your IQ, instead of your CBS(credit bureau score).
I was in charge of the Fraud dept, for a major credit card company for 4 years.
NPSL - No Preset Spending Limit
Had to make a $100,000 or more a year just to qualify. Celebs, and stuck up, stuffy people were all my reps dealt with. Amazing how much a $15 late fee means to someone, making $250,000 a year.
2 Late payments within a 6 month period, and you automatically get re-rated...No matter who you are, usually.
Same thing with cell-phones, and lately its data tranfer rates.

I bet that was the most expensive porn he ever paid for!! Feel sorry for the guy. I have cingular and an unlimited data plan. I used it with my computer for a couple of minutes and waited for my bill to come in the mail. Only after I actually verified that they did not charge me different for the connections did I let it rip on the computer data connection. It could have gone either way, but I made sure first.

OVER? did you say "Over"? Nothing is over until we decide its over, was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell No!!!

I believe with that "Calibur" of clientele it is more of a psychological issue... Pride and or the fact that someone is telling them they made a mistake. Actually $15 is no more than a Club Sandwich now-a-days. So, their anger must go deeper than just 15 bucks.
In another thought...How do I apply for one of those NPSL cards... (I hardly use "R" type credit.)

I have a few NPSL, Chase (not Chevy Chase) is like that <- but you do have a limit that you can roll from month to month. American Express of course, have business and Clear. I never carry a balance on them and call back every 6 months to get the limit that I can roll increased just in case I go through a crisis and need a $40k bike or something along those lines.

For this poor guy, he was probably just trying to save $50/month on cable.

On a seperate note, it can not be highspeed can it? 3G maybe?

Can't choose between the R1 and the 10R so I am keeping both but settled with an 1198S when I came home

Keep it up!!!!!!!

Tough titty. He was lucky they settled for 3000$. It specifically says in your contract with data access that you are not to use it for hooking up to PC and downloading through (go look it up. Everyone has this) - you are only supposed to use it for your phone.

People really need to read the things they sign.
