Man Killed After Collision With Police Cruiser, here we go again - July 26, 2007, 01:02 PM

MOUNT SINAI, N.Y. -- A Long Island man was killed after his car collided with a Suffolk County police cruiser that was responding to a call, authorities said Thursday.
Gabriel Bergianti, 27, of Port Jefferson Station was driving his 1993 Ford Mustang southbound on Hallock Avenue at about 9:45 p.m. Wednesday when it collided with a police cruiser at the intersection of Route 347, Police Commissioner Robert Dormer said in a statement.

At the time of the crash, Officer Robert Falisi was responding to a call of 15 motorcycles speeding on Route 25A in the Miller Place area. Falisi had his lights and sirens on and was pursuing the motorcycles when the crash occurred. The motorcyclists were never apprehended.

Bergianti was taken to John T. Mather Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Falisi was taken to St. Charles Hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and released.
Both vehicles were impounded for safety checks.

My two cents: just blame the motorcyclists!!!!!

All this for a speeding ticket!!!! I understand the speeding, but wait for the right oppurtunity to chase. Speeding through local streets to catch a motorcyclist for speeding is not smart.

Im not familiar with that area at all, but a couple things struck me as odd from that article. First, it says that the officer was RESPONDING, not IN PURSUIT. Second, the article says that the accident happend at the intersection of Hallock Ave. and 347. The motorcycles were reportedly speeding down 25A in the MILLER PLACE Area. Check out this map and look how far away Miller Place is from the intersection of Hallock and 347 in PORT JEFFERSON STATION. I dont see how motorcycles were a factor in this at all. I guess what the papers are insinuating is that if the motorcycles werent speeding miles and miles away, the officer wouldnt have had to respond and therefore the accident would have been avoided?

Don't be ridiculous, police are the best drivers around and exempt from the laws of physics that govern us mortals... it is COMPLETELY reasonable for them to drive at the speeds some of them do through traffic

read the title again...."Man Killed After Collision With Police Cruiser"

A cruiser is the car type, not the Harley type!

Its the Butterfly Effect.. except with motorcycles.

Somewhere someone is riding a sport bike and somewhere else someone is dying.
Those events must be related so we'll blame motorcycles.

For a good entertaining read and for ammo for the conversations you end up in at the water cooler (or bar) arm yourself with fun fatality data that your tax dollars collect.

The CDC puts out an annual morbidity and mortality report.

http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/nvsr/nvsr54/nvsr54_13.pdf

Lists how every person in America died for the year of complete data.

Fun at parties.
