Man sets himself on fire on the National Mall - CBS News

WASHINGTON A man who poured a can of gasoline on his head and set himself on fire on the National Mall in the nation's capital has been airlifted to the hospital, police and fire officials said Friday afternoon.

The man, whose name was not immediately known, suffered life-threatening injuries, said D.C. fire department spokesman Tim Wilson.

He was standing by himself at Seventh Street and Madison Drive, in the center portion of the Mall, when he emptied the contents of a red gas can on himself and set himself on fire moments later, said Katy Scheflen, who witnessed it as she walked through the Mall.

WNEW senior correspondent Mark Segraves reported that the incident took place on the mall near the National Air and Space Museum. Witnesses told him that two joggers came to the man's aid, ripped off their shirts and tried to put out the fire.

A police department spokesman said the man was conscious and breathing at the scene. MedStar Washington Hospital Center tweeted that the man was taken there but had no condition update.

"There was not a lot people could do because it was a gasoline fire," Scheflen said.

She said he may have said something before he acted "but it was nothing intelligible." She said she did not see him holding any signs.

"I'm not aware of any signage or any articulation of any causes," said Lt. Pamela Smith of the U.S. Park Police, which is investigating along with the D.C. police department.

The D.C. police department has dispatched its violent crimes branch, which responds to cases in which a person suffers serious injury.

Mohamed Bouazizi did it better.
He didn't let anyone put him out either.
Fully committed.

Ouch indeed- nothing worse than burn wounds. Sad to see someone with a troubled mind do this. Also distressing are the callous, dumbass comments posted on that CBS site.

I don't agree with it but I respect those who have made this type of sacrifice in protest. Do we know if this guy had a cause, or a motive? I'd rather see this catch on as a statement in the US rather than mass shootings.

I believe its a more powerful statement to be honest. He may be just as nutty as the dude shooting up a schoolyard but at least he comes off as "clean".

See the original with Joe Pesci and Scott Glenn who plays Creasy's character. A pretty good watch as well. But I like the Denzel version better.
(Crazy enough, fast forward 15 years or so, and Denzel kills Scott in Training Day. He played the role of the guy that had millions stashed in his house.)

Wow. I hadn't head this till now. Guess since it didn't involve firearms the media didn't make such a big deal over it. On a side note, good thing he used an approved gas can. Otherwise they would probably charge him with transporting flammable liquids across state lines in an unapproved container.
