Massive 8.9 Earthquake hits Japan, Now huge tsunami - March 11, 2011, 06:56 AM

TOKYO – A ferocious tsunami spawned by one of the largest earthquakes ever recorded slammed Japan's eastern coast Friday, killing at least 60 people as it swept away boats, cars and homes while widespread fires burned out of control. Tsunami warnings blanketed the entire Pacific, as far away as South America, Canada, Alaska and the entire U.S. West Coast.
The magnitude 8.9 offshore quake unleashed a 23-foot (7-meter) tsunami and was followed by more than 20 aftershocks for hours, most of them of more than magnitude 6.0.
Police said at least 60 people were killed and 56 were missing. The death toll was likely to continue climbing given the scale of the disaster.
Dozens of cities and villages along a 1,300-mile (2,100-kilometer) stretch of coastline were shaken by violent tremors that reached as far away as Tokyo, hundreds of miles (kilometers) from the epicenter.
"The earthquake has caused major damage in broad areas in northern Japan," Prime Minister Naoto Kan said at a news conference.
Japan issued a state of emergency at a nuclear power plant after its cooling system had a mechanical failure. Trouble was reported at two other nuclear plants as well, but there was no radiation leak at any.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said the measure at the nuclear power plant in Fukushima was a precaution and that the facility was not in immediate danger.
Even for a country used to earthquakes, this one was of horrific proportions because of the tsunami that crashed ashore, swallowing everything in its path as it surged several miles (kilometers) inland before retreating.
Large fishing boats and other sea vessels rode high waves into the cities, slamming against overpasses or scraping under them, snapping power lines along the way. Upturned and partially submerged vehicles were seen bobbing in the water. Ships anchored in ports crashed against each other.

There is a lot of news if you just search google...

Hawaii's gonna feel some of this.
Uh-oh, Japan has a nuke power plant whose emergency shut down failsafe is malfunctioning.

They've preemptively ordered an evacuation around the area.

It was Rob's fault.

Hawaii orders evacuations in Pacific tsunami threat | Reuters

By Suzanne Roig and Jorene Barut
HONOLULU | Fri Mar 11, 2011 8:07am EST

HONOLULU (Reuters) - Hawaii ordered evacuations of its coastal areas and braced for a possible tidal wave set off by Friday's earthquake in Japan as a tsunami warning was extended to most of the Pacific basin, including northern California and Oregon.
Some 3,800 miles (6,200 km) from Japan, the main airports on at least three of the major Hawaiian islands -- Maui, Kauai and the Big Island of Hawaii -- were shut down as a precaution, and the U.S. Navy ordered all warships in Pearl Harbor to remain in port to support rescue missions as needed.
Civil defence officials ordered all Hawaiian coastal areas evacuated by 2 a.m. local time, about an hour before the first wave was expected to hit the islands at 8 a.m. EST/1300 GMT.
Authorities also ordered evacuations from low-lying areas on the U.S. island territory of Guam in the western Pacific, where residents there were urged to move at least 50 feet (15 metres) above sea level and 100 feet (30 metres) inland.
Guam initially appeared to have emerged unscathed.
"So far no waves," Lorilee Crisostomo told Reuters by telephone from Guam, roughly an hour after the tsunami was first due. Two hours later, Guam Police Department Officer A.J. Alajadia said there was still no sign of trouble.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reported a tsunami more than 5 feet (1.5 metres) above sea level on the Midway Atoll between Japan and Hawaii, but there were no reports of damage.
The agency said the tsunami warning was posted from Mexico down the Pacific coast of South America. The advisory was later extended to a stretch of the U.S. West Coast from Point Conception, California, north through Oregon.
President Barack Obama, a native of Hawaii, was notified of the massive Japanese quake at 4 a.m./0900 GMT and instructed the Federal Emergency Management Agency to be prepared to affected U.S. states and territories, the White House said.
"We will continue to closely monitor tsunamis around Japan and the Pacific going forward, and we are asking all our citizens in the affected region to listen to their state and local officials," Obama said in a statement.
The quake off Japan's northeast coast was the biggest in 140 years and triggered tsunami waves of up to 30 feet (10 metres) that swept across farmland, carrying away homes, crops, vehicles and triggering fires.
On Easter Island, a Chilean territory in the South Pacific, authorities planned to move residents to higher ground hours before a possible tsunami was expected to reach the volcanic isle on Friday afternoon.
Chilean President Sebastian Pinera, whose country was hit by a devastating 8.8 magnitude quake and ensuing tsunamis that killed more than 500 people a year ago, called on Chileans to remain alert, but to continue with their daily routines.
GAS LINES, ALARMED TOURISTS
The Hawaii evacuation zone included the famous Waikiki Beach, the main hotel and tourist hub in Honolulu on the island of Oahu.

The tsunami warning issued late on Thursday for Hawaii prompted civil defence officials to order all Hawaiian coastal areas evacuated by 2 a.m. local time, about an hour before the first wave was expected to hit the islands at 1300 GMT.
The evacuation zone included the famous Waikiki Beach, the main hotel and tourist hub in Honolulu on the island of Oahu.
Civil defence sirens blared statewide starting shortly before 10 p.m. local time, and police with bullhorns urged people to move to higher ground. Authorities also walked the beaches to awaken homeless people.
Lines for gasoline stretched for blocks, and people rushed to stores to stock up on emergency supplies and water. Downtown Honolulu and Waikiki were packed with fleeing motorists.
As Hawaiians braced for a tsunami, government geologists reported that a 4.6 magnitude earthquake was unleashed at about 11 p.m. by the restive Kilauea Volcano, which has been spewing lava and triggering small seismic tremors since Saturday.
Ocean waves up to 6 feet (2 meters) above sea level were detected by deep-ocean gauges near Wake island, Midway and Guam, said Chip McCreary, a spokesman for the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
Kauai island was expected to be the first hit in Hawaii by the tsunami advancing from the west and would likely take 20 to 30 minutes to cross the state, McCreary said.
