Wait til you see the proposed "Gravity Tax" go into effect. Already passed the state reps and on the state senate floor now. In a nutshell, O'Malley decided that without his uber-liberal wisdom, the state would begin to sink, literally. The state of Maryland will begin to sink under the weight of it's residents by way of them pushing down on the ground with their weight. The only reason this hasn't happened already is because Maryland is so lofty and ethereal in its liberal, tax-oriented socialist political climate that this altruism buoys the land mass. If that ever diminishes, it's below sea level we go. This means that gravity is actually detrimental to Maryland and its governing bodies. Everyone knows that gravity itself would not exert these detrimental effects without people and their material possessions on which it pulls. Therefore, each and every citizen will need to pay a special tax to compensate the state for its extra effort put forth against the effects of gravity in keeping the state's land mass above sea level.

I think it makes really good sense. I want to sell all of my possessions and give the proceeds to this effort because it is very important that Maryland have the most bizarre, screwed up taxation system of the whole USA.

Makes sense from an urban planning and development sense, though it's obviously ripe for ridicule when you call it the rain tax.

Next up, every MD resident will be levied a Respiration Tax for adding air pollution to the environment, because Carbon Dioxide is Carbon pollution, right?

And to think, Maryland's state motto is 'The Free State.'

“Any man who tries to be good all the time is bound to come to ruin among the great number who are not good. Hence a Prince who wants to keep his authority must learn how not to be good, and use that knowledge, or refrain from using it, as necessity requires”.

- Nicolo Machiavelli 1469-1527

Theres a pervasive societal fallacy that age-old problems need more taxes. I bet the preservation could be paid for if there wasn't such rampant spending. Divert funds from some extraneous bullshit and stop levying new taxes.
