Arrow Mermaid Parade is Almost Here! - May 8, 2009, 01:12 AM

Coney Island : June 20th

A completely original creation of Coney Island USA, the Mermaid Parade is the nation's largest art parade and one of New York City's greatest summer events.

The Mermaid Parade celebrates the sand, the sea, the salt air and the beginning of summer, as well as the history and mythology of Coney Island, Coney Island pride, and artistic self-expression.

The Parade is characterized by participants dressed in hand-made costumes as (topless) Mermaids, Neptunes, various sea creatures, the occasional wandering lighthouse, Coney Island post card or amusement ride, as well as antique cars, marching bands, drill teams, and the odd yacht pulled on flatbed.

What's the best way to get to Coney Island? Drive? Bus? Train?
Cliff, you've been to this before... is it better to rent a hotel the night before?

I would REALLY like to go to this!

It would be cheaper to take the train to penn station then take a taxi to brooklyn.

Was gonna ride up there with my crew a few years ago. I thought it was in danger of being canceled. Good to see it's on.

What do you value more? Life or Image?

"I don't ride, I usually just sit around wearing a tshirt and my icon back protector and talk shit about anyone who does not have a liter bike. That's how you can pick me out of a crowd. I also wear a red tophat."

Driving: 231 miles each way from Arlington. I get 19 mpg, so 24 gallons or so x $2.12 = $51.88 in gas plus tolls.
Bus: $50 roundtrip, no tolls. https://www.dc2ny.com/
Train: $144 round trip. www.amtrak.com *down and back in same day*
