From Military to Federal Gov Job: Rank conversion? - July 31, 2014, 08:48 PM

Long story short. My gf is in the Army Rank E6 and close to retirement time, but considering leaving for Federal position. Is there a direct conversion to Federal GS series?
or is qualification still based on salary for military?

As far as I know, the KSA's for the grade are all that matters, not a former servicemember's rank. It'll be evaluated against that.

Now, if she's getting employment in the same field she works in for the military, then she'll already have the KSA's lined up for her military experience.

There's no direct conversion to civil service for past military members. The only thing that matters, as Fitz alluded to, is the job and knowledge/skills required to do that job.

I wish her good luck on getting into CS, because it seems like it's getting harder and harder. Nobody deserves it more than a prior military member.

You do at least get hiring preference if you're a vet... That means you will be higher up the hiring list than a non-vet with a similar rating from personnel. Being a vet is worth a pretty good number of points on the rating last I heard. I don't know how that works out in real life for the vets but I do know I've been bumped by a vet before.

5 points for an eligible vet, 10 points if you have 30 percnt or more VA disability, and in reality, it does dick-all for you most of the time because these fuckfaces have someone picked out before they even post the job.

Doesn't help the pay grade aspect, but does get your app rated higher.

I have been bumped by a vet from a posting made specifically for me/to get me a promotion. This is one of the screwy things about working in gov. Your organization values you/wants to promote you and they have to go through bunches of crazy hoops to do it. Then you get bumped and have to wait for it to get posted again...

It does seem weird to me that you can't just convert directly to GS, WG, AD or whatever...

GS 15 could be the equivalent to O6- something I've seen in positions and who is eligible for such, so go down from that....also really depends on the branch/agency.

E che cazzo!
