Mixed Martial Arts Training...SIGN UP! - April 26, 2007, 02:10 PM

I've just signed up with www.novamma.com and taking Muay Thai Kickboxing, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and no-gi/submission grappling.

Anyone else working with Lloyd Irvin and his coaches from .net?

Hope that some of you will sign up!

nice nice, i've trained on and off at evolve academy here in maryland (member of the lloyd irvin assoc) and yamasaki academy... done about 2 yrs of MT there (1 at yamasaki) and tried jiu jitsu for about a month lloyd irvin is good buds with my former boss, he's a great guy and very skilled.

once school's over, i hope to get back into it this summer and ideally, will have the endurance to do a bit more grappling.

Krav Maga is some viscious shit!

I'm a lover though... I think it's cause I'm big...

Usually at those gyms it's a bunch of 5' 5" little buff guys running around...

poor chaps

I know dave carter personally. He is a ass. Just kidding. He is one of the coolest guys and talented I know. We used to train BJJ/ MT/ FMA/ JKD together at a school in woodbridge.

I currently train with Leo Dalla for BJJ.

Krav Maga.....well I have my doubts. They teach you how to disarm a gun in the face or back of the head...etc.

Let me just say this. Before anyone pulls the Israeli Special Forces card, not one of these instructors was a part of that (not a ISF soldier). Training with them for a week does not give you the bragging rights to claim it.

I know at least two people at my job that trains KM. One is a chick that is thickums (that tore her acl) and one dude is so blindfolded by it that I would um could hand him his ass.

Im a BJJ blue belt with about 4 years training. Im not the shit by any means. But beware any martial arts that:
* Have test (may be waived depending on the circumstance)
* Have test that could potentially promote you month to month
* Make you test in front of that associate instructor that lives across the country
* Has blackbelts (or equivalent) that are younger than 18
* Testing fees that some how increase as your rank does
* Doesn't show you how to defend yourself if you are on the ground (How many fights do you see where neither participant doesnt end up on the ground)
* Claims legendary status because they trained or trained with some elite group

Just my .02

I was taught a little knife fighting/hand to hand by a guy trained in Krav Maga off and on for about a year. It's no joke, and neither was the guy teaching me. Less "chivalrous" attacks are all utilized "take the least amount of damage while inflicting the most" is the whole entire point.

My VERY LIMITED two cents.

Post script: I couldn't walk right for two days after more than one sparring session. It's not a "sport" it's a "f*ck you up" session.

I'm a 2nd degree in Ryukyu, red/black in taekwondo. I wanted to get into Aikido and Krav Maga for the armed combat portions and circular motions... but most of the training studios around here seem to be pretty... poop.

Krav Maga is rigorous, levels are not given easily, and I don't know of any place around here that teaches it, but if you've done grappling you'll be a natural. If anyone finds a place around here that instructs in it (certified instructor) I'd be down for that in a second.
