Anyone know the deal with Motorcycle Cops and...ahem....their lack of gear?

For all the squid violations t-shirt and jeans is like way up there on the charts. So what is up with motorcycle cops riding 14 hours a day in slacks, high boots, t-shirt (basically); and maybe gloves on....are those uniforms skid proof or what?

Seriously, I want to know if there is anything more than meets the eye with them.

I am sure Joe Rocket would make a mesh jacket that had a spot for a badge.

Part of it is the HD mindset. Part is the fact that you have to sit atop a 1500cc air cooled engine in traffic with little air flow. Even a mesh jacket is hot. The boots protect you up to the knee. The Kevlar vest protects your back and chest.

My first goal is to get our next motors to be BMW instead of HD. If I get that accomplished, I am pushing for full face flip up helmets and Aerostich suits.

Also...I saw a couple motorcycle cops on 28 today....on Yamaha dirtbikes! I don't know enough about dirtbikes to say what kind they were, but it was pretty cool.
Lee,
They were most likely riding the Yamaha XT225 dual sport bikes. The Sheriffs Dept. in Culpeper has one or two of these also. No need to worry, a semi skilled six year old on an XR50 could give them a decent run. Nothing like 225cc's or unbridled air cooled four stroke furry at your disposal!!

I've actually thought about this too. But you have to keep in mind, who cares?

Yeah - but on my 300th motorcycle related trip this week (back from Fast Lanes), today I pretty much only saw cops on bikes and was curious as to what the deal was. It is not like they are sitting in speed traps - they are on 66, toll road, etc....kevlar vest or not - your arms/legs/ass are screwed.

Good luck. I went to college in WV and my college honey's town had like 6 people with jobs....they still passed a town referendum to get them on Harley's. I think they sold the town's young for medical experiments to pay for the new bikes.

I saw that the London police picked up a dozen or so R1's in like 99 or 2000. Like to see a cop spend 14 hours on that....even with heli-bars thats got to hurt.

You guys will never get off HD's.....never ever ever.

As for the mindset - I can see that. Here in Arlington the MC have MONEY winter gear...those winter jackets they have (I think) are sweet. A little WWII (the wrong side) but snappy. I just would think they could come up with some form of cool (nice pun, huh?) protective gear for the summer. The police must have some stats on the gear safety issue. Man, one disability claim saved would pay for phoenix jackets for everyone probably.

Fairfax county had some kind of training today where like 50 cops on PEDAL bikes were going down the parkway, they had cops on dirtbikes and trucks going from light to light stopping crossing traffic. Thats probably why you saw them. I was on my way to springfield and followed them almost the whole way.

I always thought safety was the first concern. I would have figured the MC Cops would consider their personal safety before staying cool. If heat exhaustion is a factor then they should take more water breaks.

I think they consider their level of training to be the greatest factor in keeping them safe. That does not keep them from getting rearend by some dumbschmuck who can see the big bike with all the flashing lights, but it does keep them out of many jams.

I cannot fault them too much. Ever spent 8 hours in traffic on a big air cooled HD in the summer? There are only so many water breaks you can take before it is pointless for you to even be out there.

Woody, don't get me wrong, I hate the "gear" nazi's. If a guy is or isn’t going to wear gear than that is his personal choice. I will never fault anyone; it's their life and their body.
GoGo, I never question MC Cops ability or training, but like you alluded to, there are dumb asses driving up and down these highways all day long. Case in point is that Virginia State Trooper that got killed last October on 95 South (true no amount of gear would have saved him). I was simply pointing out that for a department as a whole, structured to protect and serve, it would be in their best interest to provide full safety gear for their officers. Something a little more durable then those tight slacks they have to cram into. I realize it's got to be hot as shit on those bikes but these cops place themselves in harms way for 8 hours a day. It just seems odd that they wouldn't want every piece of protective equipment available.

I honestly cannot say why they don't. I have my own ideas on it. If I pass the agility test next Tuesday and get accepted to the Motor Course, then I'll ask them. Since I will be spending 10 hours a day on a bike on a hot tarmac in July, I am sure they will look at me like I am stupid when I ask why they dont wear coats in July.
