Are Motorcycle Police Necessary During the Winter? - December 26, 2012, 10:53 AM

So today while driving in on the snow and ice covered roads I saw a DC Park Police. Thats not odd seeing a Park Police during winter, snow and ice, but it is Odd seeing one without the side car in the snow and ice.

So it made me wonder...is there still an advantage of using motorcycles during the winter months? Traffic is way down, not a lot of tourist, and even Terrorist tend to wait to the busy seasons to launch strikes.

I'm sure that the bike will have the side car put on soon. It just made me wonder the benefits vs. the risks.

cool article about DC Motorcycle Cops....

Even with a sidecar, the risks out weight the benefits in my mind. One tire to plant power on a slick surface = no bueno.
Sure it's lighter and has a narrower tires which would reduce hydroplaning and skiing - but everything else on the road doesn't.

Do you think its more about the display of skills or something along those lines?
I just cant see why thy would run motorcycle police during the winter seasons unless they are hired as Motorbike only cops.

They're riding Harley's in equestrian gear. That pretty much tells me that safety, performance, and efficiency are not high on the priority list.

I'd say that the chance of an officer actually giving chase in one of those things is about zero; and motorists give them a wide berth so they are safe to putter around in. Effective? The attract lots of attention, so I suppose the obvious police presence when they are about is a crime deterrent.

I think it's wasted federal expenditure like anything else. There is no purpose for them and it's a risky proposition. One of those guys get injured and they're making $80K a year sitting on their couch.

The only DC moto cops that actually do any chasing are those on the Honda Rebel 250s. The Harleys are purely for escorts and show.

When motorcycle police during the winter are banned, only the criminals will have motorcycle police during the winter.

I always see them... I've been working down town DC since 1986 and at the very least Park police are always out on the motorcycles.
Even the year we had the super bad snow storm...once the streets was derivable they were out.

Today is the only time I can think of that I saw one out in ice/snow with no side car.

I'm sure he was probably taking it to the shop to get it mounted, but seeing him made me think.

So far they mostly control traffic on the motorcycles so.....

The way it was explained to me was that when you become a motor officer, you are issued a bike and that is your patrol vehicle, rain or shine. You don't get a cruiser when the weather gets nasty. That way, it seems more fair to the guys that don't ride. You want to be a motor officer and ride when it is sunny and 74 degrees out? Ok, but you will ride when it is raining and 36 degrees out as well. I wanted to be one but it sorta killed my dream after that.

I don't know how it works in DC but I was shooting the breeze with one of our clients who is a MoCo motorcycle cop and he was telling me that he has both a bike and a cruiser and can pick which he wants to use on any given day. Not sure if this is based on seniority or what, but I thought that was pretty cool.
