Muscle Cars in Iran - November 13, 2010, 08:13 AM

It's so easy to think of Iran as a monolithic block of evil. The reality is a little more nuanced.

Would have never guessed something like this is going on in Iran. This is awesome.

I bet the government figure these guys are old and this little radical obsessions of theirs will die with them before it morphs into a revolution

That's so awesome. Iran is portrayed (as a whole) fairly negatively in the media, though this shows they're not all anti-American. It's largely the leadership that doesn't particularly care for the West. Not all Iranians are fanatics.

Actually, it is pretty well documented that a large portion of the Iranian population is very Western and Democratic. They are being crushed under thumb by the President and senior religious leadership.

That is why most people from that region will refer to themselves as Persian instead of Iranian.

Isn't gas like 13 cents a gallon there? I'd rock a muscle car every day if gas was cheap.

Then again... That's just me.

I would think cars stuff is a big hobby for guys in Iran. If opportunities drinking and women are limited, cars are the next thing in line...

Anyway, Iran is a good example of US media self censoring and following the US govt line of portraying Iran as evil. Lest we forget, we had no problem backing Saddam as he was using chemical weapons against Iranians in the Iran-Iraq war. (Or using them on the Kurds.)

Of course Iran is messed up in many ways, but if you go to Europe no one there seems to have nearly as big of a problem with Iran. People from EU travel to Iran for tourism, etc, no problem. Iran is divided between a shrinking older conservative population, and growing young and liberal US friendly population.

Good post. Good to see my Iranian brothers rocking the old American muscle. I've always dreamed of owning an old muscle car. Maybe one of these days..

Oh yeah, and I'm happy to see some comments from some intelligent folks too, instead of the regular ignorant comments that would be made about something related to the Middle East

I'm not really surprised since Iran was one of the most modern countries in the world up until the early 70s. Once the Shah got overthrown and Islamic law took over everything changed. I'm sure they have a lot of hidden Western wealth still inside the country.
