My gift to myself - HD DVD Player...Maybe - November 22, 2007, 09:34 PM

I know there are some Theater buffs on here. There was an article recently comparing the two formats. Heres the article

http://www.audioholics.com/news/indu...y-hd-dvd-equal

So, I was thinking about picking up the new Toshiba HDXA2....

Pro's? Cons? Anyone have this unit?! Amazon has them on sale right now...

They were selling the A1 at wal-mart for $99

Ding!!

The fucking new CEO of Sony said they probably should have gotten together with the HD DVD folks and come up with a single solution. No fucking shit

Once paramount changed to HD DVD only, i think that is the fork in Blue Ray. I have HD DVD at my house.

I say buy it james, it will only add more proof that HD DVD is the way to go.

Plain and simple, if history has taught nerds anything it's that Sony loses media format wars. Blu-Ray lost the minute the porn industry went HD-DVD. Just like with Beta/VHS.

Bingo! Sony tries proprietary bullshit like BETA and MINIDisc and UMD (PSP) and they all failed... miserably...

Porn is what drove the VHS win although it was lower quality, the indutry KNEW that some dude jacking off wasn't going to care whether the bouncing titties were slightly clearer on his TV, he cared if he could save $4 for the next porn... so beta failed.

The same will be true for HD although the porn industry is largely internet based now and therefore a good bit less influential.

Porn is not HD exclusive, and BlueRay is not Sony exclusive.

The problem with the format war is that different movie companies are picking one over the other instead of having both. If companies like Paramount produced BOTH formats, then the war could have a winner. Instead, they're being lobbied and chosing to do things ONLY on one. So the formats will be out for a while.

It sucks and we all lose.

as a side note, the Xbox 360 is still selling better than the Playstation 3.... therefore the format wars WILL and ARE currently favoring the HD setup that is coming with the Xbox over the Bluray setup you pay $250 extra for on an already costlier system (playstation).

I'm calling HD by TKO

Incorrect Draven,

Production companies have to pay SONY for licensing rights to burn to Blu-Ray. Any production company associated with PORN SONY is not giving them the rights as they did with Beta.

All in all this is stupid and is only hurting the consumer. Had it not been a format war, we would have a bunch of players at the cheap already and be moving on...

haha, good luck they cant keep those in stock. It is the A1 model so its firmware is a little older. Wont stop you from seeing the movies, but the newer A2 firmware takes advantages of some extra video componets and faster bootup type things...

James if you don't have a projector then just get the HD A3 model. only difference I read about between that and the higher priced ones was that the A3 is 1080i and you'll only be able to tell a difference between interlaced and progressive scan if you have a larger screen. I bought the A3 at Best Buy for $200 and got to choose two movies (now 3) plus it comes with 300 and Bourne Identity.

btw I have both Blu-Ray and HD DVD there are more titles available on Blu-Ray. evidenced by going to bestbuy and seeing them on the shelves and from looking at the formats on Netflix.

oh and if you have kids - Disney chose Blu-Ray.
