need aluminum welding job done - February 28, 2011, 03:49 AM

I managed to pull the tow hook and part of that frame out from my car by putting a side load on it. Yes I'm and idiot, but that is not what the thread is about.

The car is stock but it is low, so the lift should accommodate that. All the breaks were at the welds. There are about half a dozen welds that need to be made. It is mostly 1" box section. Looking for welder in nova.

Ex-Military Welder. All types of metal including titanium. Out of his garage in Fairfax. Mainly deals with motorcycles but can do it all. Inexpensive and honest. And a great guy too.

Does his garage have a lift? I can get it up on jack stands with my lopro floor jack, but I couldn't transport that special jack in the car.

Oh snap, I need to save that!

I've used Piper Motorsports in the past, EXCELLENT welder, one of the best if not the best in the area (sorry dodge131 lol) Check them out at Piper Motorsport

BUT - Be prepared to pay a premium price, I belileve his rate was like $100 an hour + consumable materials.

I have seen personally Pipers work and Mike Gerbers (Mach V) work and I will agree with Dodge on this. Mike Gerber is probably one of the best fabricator/welders in the area hands down.

Yeah, mis fabrikate, forgot about her.

I need a place that can get the thing up on a llift. It sounds like mach 5 is a car shop and should be so equipped. I would have already called them if I wasn't stuck in meetings all day. I will report back how it turns out.

I'm used to my local muffler shop guy doing simple steel stuff for little more than beer money. I have a feeling this is going to be chrystal money

Well I went to Mach 5 to have this done. They seemed to do an okay job, but man, did they see me coming. This was a job with 7 small welds. $300, including Corvette Tax. Their first estimate was higher that, but they trimmed a little off after I said I was walking. At that point I just had too much time invested and just went with it. $300 is just a little too much for a 1 hour job. I won't be back.

Who did you talk to over there? And did it actually only take an hour?

I'm not going to slam them. It might have been a few minutes longer or maybe they had 5 guys working on it. In hind sight, I should have pulled a u-y when I saw the bentley parked out front. I presume its driven by the welder. I talked to a service writer / front desk guy, not the welder.

I would hate to see what you would say if you were going to bash them. I guarantee the Bentley is not owned by the welder. I love how people bitch about the cost of fixing their car. You dont call the doctor after having surgery and tell them they over charged you do you? Its a skill to weld aluminum and the equipment to do it costs a lot of money. If it was easy to to do you wouldn't have had such a hard time finding a place to get it done now would you? Could part of your frustration be from the fact that you fucked up your car doing something Idiotic (your words not mine) and now you had to pay for that mistake and since you do not see the value in the years of practice he has put in to hone his skills allowing him to be able to fix your car quickly you have come to the conclusion that he over charged you because you have a corvette?
