Need beater under $3K. What you got? - October 25, 2013, 07:15 PM

Well, my niece apparently got herself in a bit of a pickle and it will cost more to get her car out of the impound than it's worth. So we're probably buying her a car so she can go to work and back. She lives in Waldorf, MD. I figured I'd ask you guys first since there is a crap ton of shit buckets on CL that I don't trust. Let me know what you got. Thanks!

Budget: Under $3K. Mileage: Don't care as long as it works and it's been maintained well.

I got a 02 Ford Taurus with 115k miles with new rear shocks, new tranny 40k miles ago, etc. One ding on both sides. small scratches on the hood. Nothing major. It could use a new heater core which is the only problem I noticed sofar.

I could sell to you for 2k, but it is not ready for a week or so. My girl is currently using it and she is about to buy a new vehicle. Not sure if you guys can wait at all.

I'm buying my parents a new car next week and their Silver 99 Passat 1.8T will be available:
ex:

153K on the ODO.
5 Speed Automatic Transmission
1.8L 4-Cyl Turbo Engine. Very good gas mileage even by today's standard.

All options except for 4Motion and pleather heated seats.
Fabric manual seats. Power everything else. 3 keys; two switchblade and one valet. Exterior paint in presentable and good condition. Shows some wear appropriate for a vehicle of this age, but far from embarrassing or unsightly.

Exterior overall is 7/10
- Softball sized depression in the rear trunk lid (Father backed into a bollard).
- Small dent on right front fender near the headlight (Father misjudged distance while parking)
- Small crack in right rear taillight (Father backed into another car that pulled behind him)
Yes, my Father sucks at driving! He's managed to crash every car he has ever owned or been in the family, and at least one rental and we have barred him from driving any car outside of one that he pays for and opens a separate insurance policy for - but that's another story.

Interior 8/10
- Fabric headliner on moonroof sun shield fell off. (Never seen if kept back)
- Glove compartment latch is broken. (Still opens if you push the latch in the hole)
- Middle armrest broke its hinge and is loose.

- No oil leaks (I recently had the value cover gasket replaced.)
- 1 year old Pirelli tires w/warranty. (10,000 miles on them at most).

Needs:
- Needs a L or R (I forget which) upper control arm. Not essential, but would be nice.)
- A/C Recharge
- Brake job in about 5,000 miles

Recently passed MD emissions inspection. Will pass MD roadworthy inspection.

I can vouch for its maintenance since I paid for a majority of it. (Being the "good son" is a bitch.)

Asking price: $2,000.00 to a recognized .netter.
$2,500.00 to anyone else.

People are so nice to girls. If i needed a car because mine got impounded, my family would have laughed me out of the house.

But for $3k you should be able to find something decent. My brother had a Geo (Chevy) Prism; reliable, great gas mileage overall decent cheap car.

I like it but I worry about anything turbo at that mileage. Also the control arm worries me a bit. I could change it out if I still lived out there but we don't want her to end up spending a ton of money keeping it up either.

If I sell my FZ-1 soon, I will be picking up a Tacoma. That being said, I will have my 02 Protege5 for sale. Super reliable, fun and good on gas. 5speed with 179k miles but does not leak or burn any oil.

You'll be the first to know when or if it goes for sale.
