Need a Car Scanner Tool! - March 30, 2009, 02:03 PM

My car has a "service engine soon" light on. I had it scanned before and it said "cataylst system". I already replaced one 02 sensor and it didnt' go away so I think the only two things it could be is the other 02 sensor or the catalytic converter. Anyone have a scanner that I could use to find out what I need to fix or have any other ideas. I need to fix it so I can sell it since I already bought a new one. It's a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am.

Funny enough I got one sitting in my car right now. My boy's car threw a code as well. I work in Tysons so if you pass by here just stop by.

I have a Scanner with me in Herndon, Dulles Corner

Any Autoparts Store will have one as well, they can scan for you.

I had it scanned at Autozone once but it just said "catalyst system". I don't want to keep replacing parts and find out that wasn't it (like I did once already).

I thought the codes had to be cleared, just replacing the part doesn't make the code go away.
Many times when i have had cars checked and I pay the $50 or whatever they say, we cleared the code but you need to replace such and such before long or the code will return.

So you guys think I should take it to a shop and pay them to tell me? Are their scanner tools more specific? If it costs too much it won't be worth it since the car isn't worth a fortune.

I would say try and resolve the issue outside of a shop... since people arent buying new cars and fixing there old ones shops quotes have gone way up.... I think they want something like 600 bucks for just a front brake job

that is correct, Honda told me that on my last service when i skipped a svc through them, they checked it and said that yes service had been done but system wasn't reset.

Have them scan it and clear it again and post the code #. I have a few friends with shops it may just be something silly. What kind of car is it?

This is right. Go back to Autozone and have them clear the code. If it pops up again, get the actual code 'number' and google it to look for known issues. Don't just start parts hanging! Or you can post it here and we will pretend like we know what we are talking about as usual.
